Inside the beat with the 2011 Orioles.

Baseball is about so much more than what you see on TV or read about later. The best part about being a sportswriter is the inside stories, the fun color, the stuff you remember years after the stats and game stories fade. This is the fourth of a weekly series about the 13 years I’ve been in baseball. Each week, I’ll spotlight a new year/team of memories.

One of the first questions you get when you tell people you’re a baseball beat writer is some form of, “What do you do in the offseason?” I’ll tell you what you do in the offseason: you hope your phone doesn’t ring. “Especially when you’re in a crowded bar on New Year’s Eve because a player on the team you cover has been involved in a fatal shooting.

Yes, everyone remembers that final walk-off win in 2011, Game 162 that kept the Red Sox out of the playoffs and caused Orioles utility ...”

Fans hated Gregg, who ended up with a 4.37 ERA, nearly as bad as Gonzalez. That is, until Gregg and David Ortiz exchanged punches on July 8 at Fenway Park. Gregg had thrown inside several times. Ortiz took exception to that and stormed the mound after jawing with Gregg once he popped up.

“You show them that we’re not backing down,” Gregg said later. “We’re not scared of them — them and their $180 million payroll.”

He was a hero in Baltimore after that. The Orioles had long been seen as a punching bag and Gregg had fought back.

who would be your poster child for this honor?

Well, Belle is a good pick.

John Rocker.  Pete Rose (although I love Pete Rose).  Dibble.  Bonds.  Clemens.  A-Rod, although he has done a masterful job of remaking himself.  Mel Hall.  Canseco.  Milton Bradley.  Doc and Darryl.  Dave Kingman.  Rogers Hornsby.  Kenesaw Mountain Landis, according to some reports, was instrumental in keeping black people out of baseball.

I mean, I hated Ortiz, too.  He was annoying as hell.  But other than playing for Boston, what'd he really do that was so reprehensible?  Smashed a dugout phone and took PEDs.  Big deal.

Good points with all. I hated Rose's personality but did respect his hustle and on the field play.

I am going to have to rethink my previous position on this.,

    • Wieters' bWAR was 13.3 through his first 4 seasons (2009 - 2012).  It ended at 18.3 after his last season in 2020, so he was basically ineffective for the last 8 years of his career. Adley's bWAR is 13.1 through his first 3 seasons. So it isn't like Wieters didn't have a strong start to his career just like Adley did.  I think the concern that folks have is that the rest of Adley's career will play out like the rest of Wieters' career.  It seemed very unlikely halfway through this year, but this has been one hell of a drop-off.   And after Wieters never lived up to expectations, it is definitely a fear that we may be reliving this again.  Let's hope this second half was just an aberration.
    • Adley has been in a horrible almost 4 month slump. Before that, he was the WAY BETTER offensive player. But I pose this question: What does it matter if Rutschman turns out to be worse than Wieters? Matt Wieters was drafted almost TWENTY YEARS AGO. No one in this org had anything to do with him being on our roster. HEck none of our current front office was even here for his entire Orioles' career.
    • I do feel like Adley is out of shape or at least has gotten more out of shape than usual. That’s part of the reason I think he’s hurt…not working out as much. If he is healthy and the slump is this bad, I’m ok questioning whether or not the new GF(ie the distraction) is part of it. Is he putting everything into the game that he should?
    • Can they? - Yes it's possible. Anything is possible.  Will they? - I have my doubts. The team was abysmal (minus Cedric Mullins and O'Hearn's pinch hit appearance) with the bat in their hands yesterday. And for many of our hitters this was nothing more than a continuation/carryover from the second half of the season.
    • Right now Geronimo Gil is better than Adley.  But I'm not gonna kick Adley while he's down.  Let him get a reset, work on some things in the offseason, and hope that this 2nd half ends up being just an aberration in a good career.
    • Which is crazy since they put 7 on the board vs Ragans hitting all singles. They had an approach that worked and then they went away from it.
    • It’s what this board does.
