Yes, that’s correct, I think the rule says that you’re not allowed to “anticipate an out”

But still that was an error and everybody knows it. It just won’t be statistically called an error, but it was still a crappy play. Everybody does it occasionally, but a good player won’t do it regularly.

the Orioles do it CONSTANTLY.

Eh. League ERA is the centering coefficient of FIP. FIP is about equally predictive of future ERA than is ERA itself. Really FIP is more reflective of a pitcher's current year's ERA after centering based on league-wide ERA than it is reliably predictive.

I don't think they have anything reliably predictive that isn't team controlled.

I like that we have more ways to quantify and qualify. i refute the idea that we have created statistical Holy Grails. ERA was/is/always has been sort of shaky as solely definitive of a pitcher's achievement, but it's not terrible.
