Connelly: This time it really feels like the end for Chris Davis as an Oriole

It just seems like Davis himself doesn’t care. I don’t think he’s cared for the last several years, and he certainly gave indications he was phoning it in, but now, it’s as if no one is pretending anymore. He’s gone for now, and soon he will be gone for good.

Speaking of Rule 5, I sincerely hope that none of our PTBNL guys is eligible. That would be a pain.
Also, I wonder if this will be the first year in eons that we don’t make a rule 5 choice ourselves?

There's no evidence and I hope we can be higher here than denigrating a player who brought a lot of fun to the orioles for many years because he didn't perform up to his contract.  Dont try and make it okay because you think he wasn't trying. He obviously cared, he obviously worked hard.

Let's not go to the he stopped caring, or thank God he's gone comments.  Its not a good look.

So? He earned the accolades, and he has earned the accusation of apathy. If you honestly think he cared this whole time I respectfully suggest that Actions speak louder than words.

I am not being unfair, or hurtful or insulting. He earned both sides of the coin.

That puts a damper on the rest of the season for me.

But seriously, I wonder what our record was with Davis and without.  It seems like it was ironically better with him in the lineup

Edit: Ok, we were 7-9 with Davis, and'we're current 22-31, so that means without Davis we were 15-22.

Record with Davis:  .438 (7/16)

Record without Davis:  .405  (15/37)

Edit2:  Even better, in 2 of the games Davis had one PA or less, which were both losses.  So really in games where he got at least 3 PAs, we were .500.

You are equating performance with actions until you can prove otherwise.

I am saying that he is terrible because he has become apathetic. And yes I do believe that, because he appeared to show no effort at all. Remember the famous photo where he’s lazily swinging at the pitch and his eyes are focused somewhere else entirely?

and that happened often enough that it’s not unreasonable to think he’s been phoning it in for three years.

I may be wrong but observable evidence tilts in one direction. And either way, he doesn’t care, and neither do I. Effort or not, he’s one of history’s worst over the last three years and I’m happy he’s leaving.

I am not going to revisit everything Davis has ever said or done, but in my opinion 90%+ of Davis’ problem is just a flat out loss of skill as he aged.    Could be that a lack of hard work or stubbornness about trying new approaches may have exacerbated that problem, but to me the guy had a thin margin of error to begin with (poor contact skills even during his prime years) and when he lost a bit of bat speed and/or reaction time it caused him to fall off a cliff.

Either way, it’s moot. If he returns next year, I will wager my immortal soul that he will prepare the same as he has( or hasn’t) he will repeat the same platitudes, and he will be the same awful he’s been for 3+ years, and we will revisit all these complaints.

If he does, or doesn’t return, doesn’t matter.

Okay @Philip good know that you aren't basing it on evidence, can't provide a link to an article or anything other than what your own eyes tell you.  You are a mad at a player for not performing and equating it to laziness.  Let me help you.

Here:

Davis works hard on hitting with Craig Gentry.

Davis want to be a veteran leader.

Davis puts on 25 pounds of muscle.

Davis formulates an offseason plan with the general manager.

This is what evidence looks like.

On the other hand we also have the time he, let's say, exaggerated, how much time he spent with the hitting coach in the offseason.

Yep.   We will never really know exactly how much work Davis put in compared to what other players do.    So, I choose not to speculate about it.   It’s well past the point where we can hope for some Hail Mary offseason turnaround, the guy is far below a replacement level player, and now we have a lot of guys who need to be in the majors taking the at bats that Davis might take.    The only justification for keeping him is the possibility that a full season won’t be played and we won’t have to pay him the full amount he’s owed.    That’s a complex decision that I can’t comment on very intelligently.

Who's this "we," homie? :)

I agree, it's wise not to speculate on what he's done or not done in the offseasons.  But even there isn't a full season next year and they don't have to pay him the full amount, it's still extremely hard to justify him being on the roster.  I'm sure it's hard to put an actual dollar value on at bats and playing time for younger players that need it to develop, but that's essentially what they'd be doing if they kept Davis on the roster for any reason for any length of time.

Except it doesn't have to be that way.  They're spending the money no matter what (I'm assuming they'll have a full season with no fans or limited fans next year) so it's high time that they cut him and let more deserving players have a spot, 162 games or not.

    • We tried to get Cease from them at the deadline, and then in the offseason. Cease was much less complicated because he didn’t have innings issues and hadn’t been a reliever.  Now we have to make a trade with them with the complications of Crochet and expect not to trade one of Basallo, Mayo, and Holliday, plus.  Yeah, that ain’t happening. Stick to the rentals of Scherzer and Kikuchi. I know it’s taboo to say this, but once you get passed those two SP, who really is that much better than Suarez?  Suarez has only given up 3 HR all year and has a 2.50 ERA.
    • Not really. What SP are you taking off for him?   It seems like our guys reached some theoretical milestones of being an all star but they did a 2-3 deep at each position. Picked the players based solely on that position and not versus the entire position group. For Ex. It was DH v DH. 2B v 2B. COF v COF.  The only gripes are possibly, Westburg vs Peredes but the one player from each team rule.  Santander vs OF but they need guys that can play CF.  Kimbrel vs Holmes maybe here but Kimbrel getting demoted and not spreading out his rough outings affected perception.  Do they still do the last player in vote?  If so, Santa and Westburg could be on the ballot?
    • Well the NFL Rams franchise deserves some mention as they started in Cleveland in 1937, moved to LA in 1946, moved to St. Louis in 1995 and back to LA in 2016.  Fascinating that in each stop they have won a season’s ultimate prize (either NFL championship or Super Bowl)! To add some extra spice to the Rams franchise history they were involved with the Baltimore Colts in what was the largest trade of all time as described here. https://www.nfl.com/news/sidelines/digging-into-the-colts-and-rams-1972-franchise-swap-was-the-greatest-biggest-tra
    • I still say crochet isn’t traded. It makes sense for Chicago to trade him but they could still get a ton for him in the offseason or at the deadline next year if things go right. I do not feel his value is at its peak right now BUT his value does risk to take a huge drop if they don’t trade him. It’s not an easy spot to be in for anyone involved in this decision.
    • I don’t think many/any want or are eager to get rid of any of our very talented young players/prospects. However, I for one, am even less eager to see us roll with the pitching staff as is. The question/dilemma is what is the right amount of talent to acquire this year (and potentially beyond given the state of the rotation) to give us the best shot possible to be successful in October? And how to we balance that against our future potential/possibilities that some of the young players provide. It’s a very precarious position that Elias is in. We all hope that he makes great decisions that lead to both success now and in the future. But I get where you are coming from Kjerstad seems to have an elite power tool as the ball seems to really carry off of his bat.
    • I’m disappointed more O’s didn’t get in, but it’s hardly the biggest travesty in all star history, so, shrug. Jim Palmer mentioned on the broadcast that he didn’t make the All Star team two of the three times he won the Cy Young.
