Bob Melvin has been cleared from all Covid protocols and returns as manager of the Padres.   The Padres were 6-5 under Ryan Flaherty in Melvin's absence.   Both are ex-Orioles.   Melvin returns to a Padre team that is without Manny Machado for a while, he suffered a pretty bad ankle sprain over the weekend.

Red Sox home town booth just talked through Caleb Joseph's recent comments on Kevin Gausman and "how we used him wrong".

I'd seen that Caleb outtake without the whole story.    The booth told it like the Orioles of the Gausman-Joseph era were prescriptive about wanting him to work fastball down and only use the split after 2 strikes.

Obviously these days he's found more success with fastballs up and the wicked split more.

Interpreting, could that have been a hidden tax of the Machado-Hardy-Britton-Buck brilliant infield defense of those years?

That whole era of O's and Buck loved them some ground balls.

The Launch Angle Revolution changed that since the best way to attack that swing is with high fastballs.

Not sure if this counts, but Tobias Myers was DFA'd by Cleveland. He was the minor league pitcher we traded to Tampa for Tim Beckham. I wonder if Elias will pluck him off waivers. He' only 23 and has options and had pretty good numbers up until his run in AAA this season.

Hard to believe it's been 5 years since that trade.  Some folks were pretty upset about it, IIRC.

I was one of those who didnt like the trade at all. Beckham had a good half season here but that was about it. So we won that trade even though it was far from certain for the last 5 years.

It was more like a good month.   1.062 OPS in August, .603 in September as the team collapsed.   I’m relieved that Myers hasn’t turned into a solid major league pitcher, in terms of that trade.

Saw this in David Laurila’s Sunday column on Fangraphs today:

“Manny Machado, who turns 30 years old on July 6, has a .282 batting average, 1,510 hits, and 263 home runs. Ron Santo had a .281 batting average, 1,592 hits, and 253 home runs prior to turning 30.”

Santo made HOF via veterans committee in 2012.  He had passed away in 2010.  Certainly a lot of folks thought he deserved induction earlier, but not enough who were voting.  Santo, February born, had 4 good complete seasons ages 30-33, with the Cubs 1970-1973, then went over to the south side and really fell apart for the White Sox in 1974 at 34 years old.  That would be his last year.   Take care of yourself Manny!
