Not gonna lie: this team looks awful

I certainly don’t put much stock in spring training, especially the first half of spring training.    But lord does this team look pathetic.   Thirteen games played and they’ve been outscored 72-45 on their way to a 3-9-1 record.    Allowing 5.5 runs a game is terrible,   Scoring 3.5 runs a game is worse.    And the defense appears to have been terrible as well.

Trying to stay calm but it’s tough to get excited about an invisible inaudible team by reading horrible looking box scores.

It's a process Frobby.

We just have to be patient.

Remember the point of all of this isn't to win games, it's to build a farm system.

Just think how much talent they will have in the farm and how much ownership will have saved to pay players after another five years of this.

I have often said that defense is more important than offense. At least at this time. I want solid defenders in the field. That’s why I didn’t care about Nunez leaving, I don’t think a dedicated DH is a good idea, I’d rather have a good defensive 3B. Defense helps pitching, and pitching/defense are two sides of the triangle.
instead, we’ve been prioritizing offense, and we don’t have ANY good defenders. We just have guys who are less terrible then the next. Our arguably two best defenders each plays center! Bad defense hurts the pitching more than offense can compensate for.

But really... wouldn’t you rather complain about bad baseball than complain about winter?

I swear I thought earlier today about starting a post basically saying the same exact thing!!

They need to clean some stuff up, spring training or not. They don’t look good.

Not like they are any great expectations here and like Frobby said it’s spring training but they don’t look very crisp. Hope the quality of play is watchable once we start on April 1.

Now if they are this bad in 2023, then Elias is going to have to answer for how the plan is progressing. I don't want the O's to lose 100 games this season, but I'm not going to feign outrage if they do.

This year hinges around what guys we've identified as future pieces are doing in the big leagues (Kremer, Akin, Mountcastle, Hays) and in the minors (AR, Diaz, Henderson, Rodriguez, Hall, etc).  I'm not so worried about wins and losses as I am seeing those guys contribute positively and getting better as the season goes on.

I'm expecting a significantly better team in 2022 and another big leap in 2023.  Of course it's hard to say what this will look like in 2 years but you can make some assumptions.

But yeah, Elias is gonna have some 'splainin to do here if it's not really coming together in 2022, IMO.

I wonder how much of this is on Hyde? Buck yakked incessantly about defense, but stood around and watched arguably the most incompetent team in the last forty years while doing nothing. I don’t know that Hyde has much input over who plays where, but I wonder if he’s being too casual about defense. Putting the fear of God in players does  have some benefit.
