On the Cordero base hit, it looked as if MC initially ran back towards the track, even though he was already playing deep, and then turned and ran back in. If he hadnt taken those few steps in the wrong direction, it looks as if he could have caught the ball. I’m not sure, and I don’t know what SOP is on a ball like this, but it does look like his route made the difference between catching and playing on a hop.

Opinions vary. DROP it!

You need to chill out ScOtt. If you are drinking, get off the Hangout.

No one is hating on anyone. we are expressing valid concerns about Mountcastle's defense.

Don't tell people to drop it.

Eh, I dunno, I remember a couple times where he had to run down balls and I was impressed.  They weren't super challenging plays but I remember thinking he covered a good amount of ground and took decent routes.

He seems be struggling so far this year, though.

If you look at his statcast info from last year it was pretty awful. He covers some of the least amount of ground out there and he has plus speed when on the way. this year his catch expectancy is beyond awful and it didn't get helped out by today.

Mountcastle took a bad route, but that ball falls in on most fielders. It would have been a tough catch for a great outfielder.
