A tale of two relays

In the 7th inning, the Twins put on a clinic on how to handle a relay, executing two perfect throws to nap the speedy Mullins trying to score on a double that short-hopped the wall and took a high bounce.

In the 8th, with runners on 1st and second, Garver hit a liner down the RF line that Santander seemed to take forever to chase down.   His relay to Wilkerson was well into the OF, and Wilkerson’s relay home bounced and was 5-10 feet up the line as the runner scored from 1B.

Now, I don’t think the plays were completely comparable, because Galvis’ hit took a high hop off the wall and Garlick was able to catch it over his shoulder while facing towards the infield, whereas Garver’s hit was more of a roller and more in the corner.    But let’s just say that after watching the crisp execution of the Twins’ relay play, the O’s play looked pretty poorly executed.

And I won’t get into the subsequent play at the plate where Stewart made a strong throw home and Sisco couldn’t handle the hop.    Very frustrating.

The Twins have for a long time executed the relay play.  They practice it and have the players to do it well.  Hyde and staff should know that.   Challenge the Twins is that situation has a low probability of success.  But yet the O's do it.

In the category of giving credit where it’s due, the O’s executed a nice Mullins-Galvis-Severino relay to end the 4th inning tonight.   Galvis in particular made an excellent relay throw and Severino made a nice short-hop catch and tag.

The tag was good, but being able to hold onto the ball with the way his glove got hit during that jump was pretty impressive.
