Does Jones release mean an addition to the 40 man roster is coming?

No, he was previously DFA'd to make room on the 40 man for someone else a week or two ago.   The Orioles had 10 days to trade him and, not surprisingly given his recent Tommy John surgery, could not.   So now they have released him.   But he left the 40 when he was DFA'd and his spot was taken that day.    This is just the inevitable conclusion of the DFA process.

The end of the Jones saga showed that the Alex Cobb trade was nothing but a pure salary dump. Considering the returns for valuable BP arms like Richard Bleier and Miguel Castro, it appeared that losing games and dropping arbitration eligible players were more important than the returns.

I've got to tell myself that because the alternative is that Elias/Sig can not identify potential useful major league players while they are minor league talent.

So far Kyle Bradish (part of the return for Bundy) looks like the only player of significance acquired in Elias trades and the jury is out on what role he will have on a contending team. The jury is out on Vavra still, but he can't stay healthy.

Elias has shown the ability to shed salary. He even negotiated some sore or buyout with Chris Davis.

Khreibel was a useful piece. I like Vespi, but am not as high on him as the rest of the board.

What scares me is that our rotation is overachieving and what happens if that ends and/or an injury happens. I’d like to see Akin get another shot at starting. Baumann and Kremer seem like just bullpen arms at this point.

O's need a 5th starter on Sunday June 5th.  Reyes and Kremer are probably candidates.   Watkins is not eligible to come off the IL until the 9th.  He probably goes on rehab  assignment and how he does on that may tell if he is activated to the O's or optioned.

Great.  So I make a trip down last Tuesday for a bullpen game, and now get to go to another one for my usual Sunday game?

Ugh.

Yes it was a clear salary dump. I don't think it says anything about Elias's evaluation abilities. The likelihood of getting anything back for Cobb was always low. Isn't the point of salary dump to accept lower/zero return in exchange for eating the cash? I don't think the Angels got much surplus value in that deal.

  • 2 weeks later...

“Krehbiel (shoulder) threw off a mound Monday, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Impact

“Krehbiel began his throwing progression last week, and he's advanced to mound work. He threw 15 pitches, all fastballs, during the session. The 29-year-old will likely get another couple of sessions in to mix in his breaking balls. He's first eligible to come off the injured list Saturday.”

Krhebiel likely back soon, the question is, does Vespi go back down when he comes off the IL?   I would like to see more of Vespi at the ML level.   I would prefer to see Baker or Gillaspie go down.  Or Voth of course but he doesn't have options.  (I am assuming Rico Garcia goes back down as soon as the Orioles are back in the United States and Akin is activated).

And of course we are less than a week away from having to drop a pitcher for a position player.

A week from now, we could have an 8 man pen of Lopez, Bautista, Perez, Krehbiel, Vespi, Akin, Tate, and one of {Voth, Baker, Gillaspie, Garcia}.   That seems like a halfway decent pen to me.

    • Good, he should cry. His performance the last 3 months including playoffs isnt something that gets forgotten easily. Atleast not for me
    • I wonder if Adley's issues are something health related but not necessarily an injury per se.  IIRC we all found out in the offseason that Ced was suffering from Crohn's in.......2020?  2021? 🤔  After Ced was pretty dreadful offensively all that season (whichever year it was). I mean something like that could potentially be at play with Adley.  Health issue but not an "injury."  Maybe something that was medically revealed after the HBP? IDK, spitballing here.
    • Not trying to be naive or contradictory, but are we sure that he's swinging at bad pitches?
    • I tend to agree, I'm not convinced. Cowser had hand/nerve stuff and continued to play his game. Westburg broke his hand, came back, and looked good. Not sure why getting hit on the hand suddenly made Adley swing at trash out of the zone.
    • I hate that Adley getting hit on the hand is the excuse why he kept playing and his season went down the crapper, yet Italian Breakfast gets hit on the hand, breaks his thumb and works his ass off to get back to his team in time for the playoffs.    I’m a 50% believer that Adley getting hit on the hand is the reason that he was so bad towards the end of the season, but it still doesn’t explain the drop in OBP. He’s getting down to Adam Jones levels of on base percentage.  His approach seems to be totally different than when he first came up. A hurt hand doesn’t have anything to do with that.
    • I watched both the Elias and Hyde press conferences in full and they both get weird around the Adley question. You can feel the hesitation on saying it's not an injury, and the way they kind of squirm around the question. If we can point to the HBP then surely they can do and would have done MRIs if Adley still felt iffy after the x-ray. Unless he's truly hiding it. But it sure feels like all parties know about something and for some reason that makes no sense to me, they aren't divulging it.
    • They might not even know. Initial x-rays were negative, it's possible that Adley thought he could just play through it and maybe it wasn't painful, just fatigued? Who knows. But unless Adley tells them (assuming they're not hiding it), nothing they can really do. Wonder if Adley just felt the All Star Break was coming up, so he'd just deal.  I think it's way too obvious of a data point to ignore, personally.
