Hays and Mountcastle are the Problem

They are the problem during this stretch drive.  They are horribly underperforming while the rest of the lineup is showing up.

Odor has been showing up to the tune of a 584 OPS over the last 28 days.

Urias has been showing up to the tune of a 606 OPS over the last 28 days. (last 14 and 7 day splits are even worse)

The difference is Mounty and Hays were supposed to be the key guys in the middle of the order.  Urias and Odor were guys that would try to bridge us to the new guys in the minors.  You don’t expect the same thing from every player.  You don’t expect your number 5 starter to put up similar numbers to your ace.  You don’t expect your clean up hitter to be hitting like the number 7 and 8 guys.

I can't believe how well the starting pitching has held up. They kept us in games both yesterday and today, but the offense was not there. And the pitchers we faced were only so-so. Right now, hitting is the big problem with this team not pitching. And while I'd love them to fly off and leave Odor any place but where they're going, most of the rest of the lineup isn't doing squat, either.

We got into the pennant chase in June when Mountcastle was the best hitter on the team.

The difference is the collective groupthink here at the hangout has decided that Mountcastle is the new punching bag.

Mountcastle is hitting .157 and Hays .171 post all star beak.  Their ops is .504 and .491 respectively and this is supposed to be the heart of your lineup.  They are not the only problem with the offense but they are a major one.

You have to think that Stowers and Henderson are on their way, but how much realistically will they help this year? It's most likely going to take some time for them to adjust and Stowers concerns me with the strikeouts.

If Elias thinks sending kids to Bowie last year to get some playoff run exposure is very valuable then it would be very valuable to bring up a lot of our kids and let them feel what it is like trying to get a playoff spot.  And maybe just maybe they give us a boost.   Machado sure did wonders for the defense in 2012.  And he actually held his own with the bat also at the age of 19.   We should not just give up on this season without firing all our bullets.
