Are we ever going to spend some money?

Our team payroll is 100 Million below the league average. And 200 Million below the top spending teams.

Meanwhile the co-ownership brothers are suing each other and arguing over who should pay for lunch.

I don't see us spending the big bucks anytime soon. What say you all?

Who specifically should the Orioles acquire during this offseason? What price should they pay?

Instead of the low-effort 'O's need to spend' post, it would be more constructive to talk about how they should allocate their resources.

Didn't the team ownership say something like their main goal was to save money?

Are they going to listen to us fans? 😆

I say lets get a hitter who has a BA above .270, we don't have one.

Lets get a Cy Young type pitcher.

Last off season, we did sign the starting pitcher who had the most HR and ER given up. I'll bet his phone was ringing off the hook, right? 😉

I'm not trying to be snarky here, but have you not been following this season?

A few weeks ago Elias said that they planned on spending this off season. How much and on whom remains to be seen.

When you are dead last in payroll that's nice of Elias to say that.

Didn't he also say a significant part of that would be to arbitration players when they don't have much in the way of them?

Makes a person wonder how much spending is going to increase.

They will spend but I believe our payroll will increase by around 20 million with arbitration alone. My idea would be trade Hays and Santander for pitching. Sign a Big time pitcher. Our 40 man roster is going to need us to trade. I was researching the astros trades for Verlander and Coke. Elias and company is so good none of what they traded amounted to anything!

Elias was never intending to compete this year. Better question is will the Orioles add payroll this offseason outside of players getting salary increases through arbitration.

Peter Angelos did spend money in the past to make the Orioles competitive, but now it's the Angelos sons in control and the family is engaged in a legal struggle over control of the franchise. We don't know how the Angelos sons feel about adding payroll and the family infighting might limit what Elias can do.

Sure Elias will be able to trade and sign players, but with all the dysfunction will it stop Elias from adding a big name player like a Verlander or similar. It will be something to keep an eye on this fall and winter.

It’s the end of a season who and where would you spend money on right now. This is a moot point right now.

I'm as skeptical as anyone that they will spend.

The biggest issue I see for this off season is that they have a few guys that are better than a DFA, but not really worth an increase in arb money.

They need a legitimate SP that can provide a little more value and quality over what they currently have. I think it's foolish to expect all of the reclamation projects to duplicate what they have done this season. I have no idea who that pitcher will or should be.

They also need an impact power bat...imo. I like Hays and Mountcastle but they've been a bit disappointing in an otherwise exciting year. Even when I look at the stats I still don't understand how they are in contention for a WC spot. Anyhow, I'm going to enjoy the rest of this season for whatever it ends up being before I get worked up about the winter.

    • We do not have to give up Holliday, Basallo, or Mayo to get what we need.
    • So you think Elias will give up one of the top 3 prospects to get upgrades?
    • “Dramatics”? That’s an interesting way of framing my opinion. I promise you I am as calm and cool as a cucumber. There’s no “dramatics” going on here. As you know, numbers fluctuate during any given period of time in the season. Good/great players have bad/cold stretches and bad/terrible players have good stretches. IMO we do not possess the type of top end talent at the back end of the bullpen needed to win multiple rounds against the best opposition in October.  If you are confident in Cano/Kimbrel or worse in Vespi/Baker/Perez/etc getting Soto and Judge out in a big spot late in the game in Yankee stadium in October, that is fine. I am not.  Just as an observer of baseball, Holmes is a much better pitcher than any reliever that we have. I would be much more confident in his talent than any reliever that we have. Now if we had Felix that would be one thing. But this season we do not. And I would hate for a team as good as ours to be held back by not making the needed/necessary move(s) before we get into October.  IMO we did that last season (with the starting pitching) and it didn’t end well. And I acknowledge that everybody doesn’t think like me nor have the same championship expectations/aspirations. Some fans/posters here have stated as much and that they are happy if we have a winning team year after year or if we just make it into the tournament year after year, regardless of results when we get there. And that’s fine. That’s just not my desired outcome. The great thing about this board is that we don’t have to agree and are able to express our opinions.
    • That’s right. Great times are here and more ahead with this group.
    • Over/under on the number of times we walk Judge and Soto in this series?   10?  Nobody else really worries me.
