I imagine this is just a compromise so the O’s don’t have to commit for an MLB salary for Cave, but don’t have to non-tender him either. Tells me they probably weren’t willing to do that ~$1.2M arbitration estimate. I think he’s just AAA depth/insurance in case other parts of the off-season plan don’t work out.

A major league team is only allowed to have 40 major league contracts at one time plus the players that are on the 60 day IL and the restricted list.  So when a played is DFA'd  that major league contract dissolves.   There are rules about how it can or can't transfer in a minor league contract.  But the major league contract ends.

There are some rules about if a player has 3 or 5 years of service on whether his salary carries over to the minors.   But Bemboom does not have 3 years of service.  And these rules are enforced by the CBA.

So if a major league contract has been terminated then what good are any terms made under that agreement?

So its NBC Sports that is reporting that Bemboom is on a minor league contract.  That is one data point.   I think we need conformation from other sites.   But I hope its true.

MLB.com has Bemboon outrighted to Norfolk yesterday.  Fangraphs has him off the 40-man as well.

Shocker!   All the hand-wringing about Bemboom’s brief assignment to the 40-man roster was a complete tempest in a teapot.  Who would have thought?

I assume Cave will be in the same situation.

Obviously you continue to miss the point as to why I, and several other smart baseball people could not think of one reason to put Bemboom on the 40-man roster.

But if it makes you feel good to pat your self on the back, feel free. 

It was dumb, unnecessary and never made any sense. You are fine with the organization making completely and utterly ridiculous moves just because they were going to DFA them before the Rule 5 draft, well good for you.

As I spoke with others around baseball, they just laughed and were befuddled why Bemboon would any organization's first business of the offseason. Most were just befuddled as to why the organization made him any kind of priority.

And the last thing I will say about this is there was no hand wringing. There was legitimate concern that the organization valued him in any way that they would put him on the 40-man after the season, regardless of the amount of time. 

As the title of this thread suggests, it remains a befuddling move as they could have just signed him to the same contract without adding him. And IF he wanted to more for some reason. they should have helped packed his bags as he we never have a significant role on a contending team and he's not some Crash Davis savant who makes pitchers better in the minor leagues.

I don't have a super issue with Cave being deep depth since he is reportedly a good defensive CF who hits left-handed. I'm not sure he will need to be protected from the Rule 5 draft though. 

He does provide immediate insurance for Mullins.
