Contenders Rotations

I did not even bother to include a team like Texas that could contend for a WC. Went with last years playoff teams plus CWS. Perhaps Twins and Angels could be better as well. Where would the Orioles rank amongst these teams?

-Orioles
Gibson

Bradish

Kremer

Wells

GRod    I do think they add one more SP

-Yankees

 Cole

Cortes

Montas

Severino

German

-Jays

Manoah

Gausman

Berrios

Bassitt

Kikuchi

-Rays

McClanahan

Glasnow

Rasmussen

Eflin

Springs

-Guardians

Bieber

McKenzie

Quantrill

Civale

Plesac

-CWS

Cease

Lynn

Giolito

Clevinger

Kopech

-HOU

Valdez

Javier

McCullers

Garcia

Urquidy

-SEA

 Castillo

Gilbert

Ray

Kirby

Gonzales

Whoever wins the Central has no impact on the Orioles WC chances.  That said not even including an improved team like CWS or someone else at worst they need to be in 3rd place in ALE if just one team from C/W is a WC.

On paper we are dead last out of those and not even close.  Of course that doesn't mean we can't continue to catch lightening in a bottle with some of those guys with good pitch selection and analytics and close the gap some, but overall I think it is what it is.  Starting pitching is clearly the weakest link of our team right now, and the slight upgrade from Lyles to Gibson didn't help much.  Sure, we can dream about GRod and what Means can do when he's back, but until both of those are actually producing MLB results, its a complete unknown.

The frustrating thing is that it absolutely did not need to be this way. Replace Gibson and Wells with, say, Chris Bassitt and Jose Quintana or Pablo Lopez and Tyler Anderson, and suddenly it looks pretty all right.

And there's not really anyone super exciting coming soon after Grayson. Hall is a reliever until he proves otherwise, IMO. Johnson probably won't be ready to debut until next year. You can't get me to buy into Rom right now when Lowther was a thing that happened.

Means is coming but who knows if he'll be all that effective this season. It's entirely possible he comes back and just can't find the changeup. We've seen starts where the changeup eludes him. He might need a full off-season to work on things. That's going to be my expectation at least, and it should be Elias' too.

A trade is sorely needed. Whatever is preventing us from signing free agents, be it convincing them to come here or simply not being able to match their contract demands, is what it is. So Elias should be ready to force the issue and bring someone here against his will, lol. Whether that's now or prior to the deadline.

We were essentially a .500 team last year with the same rotation. Does Bradish put a solid year together?  Does Grayrod hit the floor running?   Is Kremer for real?  Can Wells start and put a full year in?  Does Means pitch like pre-surgery Means by July?

Do Rutschman and Henderson establish themselves as young superstars?

Do Westburg, Ortiz, Norby, Cowser make some ML noise this year?

Do Fabian, Beavers, and Wagner become the 2022 versions of Cowser and Norby?

I'm going to keep enjoying what we have while I sit back and see what happens the rest of the offseason.

80% of the posters here need some type of intervention.  Good luck!

What does most, if not all, of this post have to do with the thread topic (or even the responses)?

Completely agree, I have seen a number of posters cite Means as a reason that we don't really need to add anyone else, as if him returning from major surgery and a year+ layoff and immediately returning to his pre-surgery form is a lock.

As far as I'm concerned, Means should not even enter the calculus for 2023. If we get any meaningful value from him this year, it should come as a nice little bonus.

It has to do with the starting rotation which is being discussed.  I rambled after that.  Now you're a moderator too?  God help us!

    • I’m outta rep, but these posts explain why you wouldn’t do it. I like Crochet, maybe they trade for him in the off season when Getz has less leverage.
    • I still have not seen a single explanation of why we’d give up those kinds of assets for a guy who might not even be pitching by August given the IP situation.  We can figure out next years rotation in the off season if we have to. We don’t need to give up major assets right now for a guy who might not help THIS year.  So I’ll ask again, WHY would Crochet even be a target, let alone someone we’d give up these kinds of assets for?  And that’s before you even factor in that the Sox haven’t exactly been reasonable with their asking price, reportedly, on other players.
    • Hahn was still the GM at last year’s deadline.
    • I'm really concerned about Crochet being able to maintain his level of production down the stretch given he's never pitched this many innings before. And I am dead set against trading Mayo or Basallo for anyone who's not an absolutely proven ace commodity over multiple years, like Burnes was.
    • This is the part of my post I left out, but definitely is worth considering.
    • They have all of the post season to consider free agents who won’t cost anything other than dollars and considering the payroll under which the Orioles currently operate that shouldn’t be a problem. The issue is adding to the current roster effectively as to make a deep PS run. Can they do that without selling the farm? Sure, but the idea we trade off Kjerstad because he has the most value (perceived or otherwise) is short sighted when you look at next year and beyond.   I've said it before, I really like Santander but he’s gone and it’s looking less likely HE is part of a package. They’ll need someone to take over in RF, be it HK or Stowers.    So, if the right move is available to the Orioles without sacrificing the future, then they do it. Then, and only then would I consider the package discussed here. Not a bad package, but one I don’t think ME makes based on his previous comments (we’re looking at competing for multiple WS titles).  And of course, I could be way off base.
