This is how the O’s did when various players started.

+13 Rutschman (60-47)

+10 Mountcastle (77-67)

+9 Vavra (18-9)

+5 Hays (72-67), McKenna (24-19), Martin (7-2)

+4 Mateo (73-69), Mullins (74-70)

+3 Owings (11-8)

+2 Santander (76-74), Henderson (16-14), Stowers (13-11), Arauz (5-3)

+1 Urias (55-54)

0  Phillips (2-2)

-1 Nevin (26-27)

-2 Aguilar (5-7), Gutierrez (3-5), Bannon (1-3)

-3 Mancini (44-47)

-5 Chirinos (29-34)

-7 Bemboom (4-11)

-9 Odor (52-61)

Kind of funny to see Vavra so high on this list in very limited playing time.

The good news is that all the guys “in the negative” are gone next year and have been replaced by upgrades (even if just marginal upgrades).

Not that it should surprise any of us, but 33 wins vs. 45 losses when the backup catchers started is very telling.

That made us 50-34 when they didn't start, or .595 winning percentage.  Put another way, our record when the backup catchers didn't start would have equated to a 96-win season.  Of course, on many Sundays when the backup catchers were starting, so too we one or two other "fillers" to rest other starters.

I grew up as a pitcher, and sometimes when I would see the Sunday lineups, I felt like if I was the starting pitcher for the O's that day, I would be like WTF???

Yeah, it doesn't look like there's much debate on who the worst players in the lineup where. The team clearly wasnt as good when Bemboom, Odor and Chirinos were playing.

O's winning % on Sundays - .407 (11-16, by my manual count)

O's winning % when backup catchers started - .423

I think we need Carlton Fisk or Johnny Bench as our backup catcher on Sundays.

Well, the Mets were 33-21 when McCann started, so that’ll work.  For that matter, the Mariners were 80-60 in games started by Frazier.   It helps that they had good teams around them!

I doubt we see Vavra playing 2B that much.  Not with Frazier, Urias, Westburg and at some point Ortiz on the roster.   Vavra best position is DH and PH.

He may not make the team, the way our 40-man roster is constructed currently.  Westburg may not either.   But let’s see what the roster looks like when spring training comes around.

Unless Elias trades position players for pitching the position player acquisitions may be done.

I see 14 players for 13 position spots.

C - Adley, McCann

1B - Mountcastle, Westburg, Santander/Stowers

2B - Frazier, Urias, Westburg, Vavra

SS - Mateo, Gunnar

3B - Gunnar, Urias

LF - Hays, Santander, Stowers, McKenna, Vavra, Frazier, Westburg

CF - Mullins, McKenna, Hays

RF - Santander, Stowers, Hays, McKenna, Frazier, Westburg

DH - Adley, Vavra, Santander, Stowers, Westburg

Why Vavra so high at DH?  Because he is the one that has hit best there so far.

Things change when Ortiz, Cowser and Norby are ready.

Hence the criticism I have offered for the Frazier acquisition.

Vavra, Urias, Westburg, AND Ortiz are all superior options to Frazier.

In the 25 PA he’s had there?   That’s a worthless sample size on which to make playing time decisions.  But it’s not necessarily wrong that Vavra will get the second most PA at DH, if he’s on the roster.  It depends who hits.
