Brian Roberts hit himself in the head with a bat after striking out and gave himself a horrible case of vertigo that lasted a season and honestly he was never the same.

Thought that was a concussion?

It's odd that it only effects him when hitting righthanders.  His OPS vs lefties is well over 1.000.   I hope that the problem can be fixed and he have a successful rest of his career.  Wasn't Roberts effected by vertigo too in addition to the concussion?

Maybe he only has it in his right ear??

I'm sure you all know vertigo is a symptom not a disease.  You can experience vertigo jumping to your feet.  If this is chronic vertigo why isn't he being tested?  One of the most common symptoms of long covid is vertigo or it could be his jock is too tight. (old joke goes with that)

Hope it just clears up by itself and he gets his head back into hitting.

I mentioned Nick Esaky earlier as a worst case scenario.  He got vertigo as a result of an ear infection.  The vertigo persisted after the infection was gone.  At that point I would consider it an injury and not a symptom.

The injury is the disease.  You can stop the infection but the damage done continues to persist.  Did his infection cause permanent brain damage?  Then brain damage is the disease that presents itself as vertigo.

I get bouts of vertigo sometimes, usually when I am up on a ladder which makes it that much more fun. I don’t see how you could bat and it would make fielding pretty scary if it came on as a line drive is hit your way. Hope it is a temporary thing for him and feels better soon.
That said, Vertigo is a great Hitchcock movie if you haven’t watched it.

Optioned or designated for assignment … merely semantics. Bottom line there were plenty of guys who was ready to never see Mounty in a Orioles uniform again.

It's not semantics they are entirely different things.  Wanting someone optioned means you want them to remain in the organization and hopefully straighten things out in Norfolk (there could be other reasons but that is typically it).

A DFA means you are fine with giving every other organization the chance to claim the player for nothing, essentially cutting the player loose.  In that case you are indifferent if the player is ever in an Oriole uniform again.  Nobody has advocated for that for Mountcastle to my knowledge.

Kolozsvary caught the 9th last night. I thought it was just a bit weird that they didn't use McCann, but on the other hand it might be kind of eye-rolly to make the veteran suit up in that spot.

Either way, Kolozsvay is DFA bait. Gotta be, right? If they wanted someone more long-term they'd go to Bemboom or Handley.

I know a lot of folks will be hoping for a Kolozsvary for Cowser or Westburg or Ortiz swap. But I kind of think they might go with a bullpen arm.

Aren't teams limited to just 13 pitchers? So they'd have to send down/DFA another pitcher to add another bullpen arm.

Super excited to have 3 catchers again!  Third time this year and it’s been so great every time.

I guess Elias anticipated that we’d have a big lead on the Blue Jays and could rest Rutschman for an inning without using MCCann.

Where are all the guys slamming Mounty telling us he should be released and that he is a bum and worthless?

Right here.

Although I don't think he should be released.  I think they should try to trade him, if they can trade him.

In regards to the vertigo, maybe this has played a part in his terrible season, maybe it hasn't.  If it has and he didn't disclose it, that's selfish.  I understand not wanting to go on the IL and wanting to keep playing but if he was trying to play through vertigo symptoms, that's not a good idea on a number of levels.

If it's true that the vertigo is a recent development, that's probably a better scenario for him.

But vertigo or not, he chases too many pitches out of the zone and has terrible plate discipline.

In regards to vertigo playing a part in his terrible season, it has not (see my previous post) If it has he's the biggest Blockhead in Baseball

Also …..blood pressure….and a warning sign of a stroke. There are plenty of things that can cause that symptom

    • This is it right here. The ideal scenario.
    • Definitely don't want Soto back.  I'm on the fence w/ Dominguez. I guess he's a fine hedge in the event that Felix isn't effective from the jump.  I don't want Rogers on this roster. As said before, I want an open competition for the 5th spot between Suarez, Povich, McDermott, Rogers. If Suarez doesn't make the rotation, he goes into the bullpen. Povich/McDermott/Rogers all have options. If I had it my way, here's what the 13 pitcher breakdown would be: SP1: Free Agent Signing (Snell, Burnes, Fried, etc.) SP2: Eflin SP3: Grayson SP4: Kremer SP5: Free Agent Signing and/or competition w/ Suarez, McDermott, Rogers, Povich Closer: Felix High Leverage: Coulombe High Leverage: Free Agent Signing Middle Reliever: Free Agent Signing *or* Dominguez Middle Reliever: Cano Middle Reliever: Webb Middle Reliever: Akin Middle/Long Reliever: Suarez I'd like to see this club sign a SP1, SP5, a high leverage arm and a reliable middle reliever type..
    • Have you not noticed, Frobby is not among us and I don't blame him one bit. Has been absent since last Wednesday evening.  By the way, I long lost track of any point and particularly relevance this discussion has to Burnes and 400 million.  Seems we are revisiting a lot of he should have - they could of - why can't we now. Great tangent though! Again, for the record, I believe no one is going to give Burnes anything close to 400 million. So my answer to the OP is again - No One!!!!
    • This posts wreaks of someone who has no idea what the cost of relievers are nowadays. Which is, of course, no surprise that you aren’t informed. Now that said, I don’t have an issue if you take someone out..I asked that very question. Who do you take out or what do you not acquire in favor of keeping Suarez?
    • You always have room for another high leverage guy.  And Akin has an option left according to FG.
    • Yea.  I feel the same way.  I really do not care strongly one way or another.  Sure, I think it's kind of ugly.  I also think HR's came pretty cheap before.  I like the exciting defensive plays it fosters and of course the random triple & odd carom make for some fun and unique moments.  But I don't think it helps or hurts the team in any substantial way short of helping out the pitching a little.   I sure don't think the players are changing their approaches.  If they keep it as is, that's fine with me.  If they modify it some way, that's fine with me as well.  It does seem like there is some opportunity for some unique seats down there by modifying it slightly.  When I first saw it, it almost appeared like a construction Phase 1.  That might be reasoning for pushing it back so far, allows them some flexibility in the future.   I also don't buy that a Free Agent RH hitter is going to care at all about the wall.   They are getting paid regardless.  I'd think that 1-maximizing payday 2-playing for a winner 3-finding a location that suits your family would be your priorities and your long-term stat line would be very close to the bottom of your list of concerns.
