I actually am a big fan and tend to shy away from any type of Mounty bashing.  Admittedly, I have no idea about defenses of other first baseman in the league and I haven't looked very closely at the advanced stats either.  In what I can recall, I do feel like he was much better later than early in the year.

I was speaking of the overall board sentiment.

Folks here are overall much harsher with their takes on him than I see when he's talked about by other fan groups.

Of course a lot of Blue Jay fans have nothing good to say about him.

From what I'm seeing there's no criteria for "utility". I'm guessing he didn't qualify otherwise that's a major snub!

This makes me less inclined to hold GG awards as any evidence of actual defensive prowess than it is to make me believe that Mountcastle is a good first baseman

Both fangraphs and bb-ref seem to rate Mountcastle as a below-replacement level defender.   Not saying I strongly agree or disagree (I have a vivid memory of him diving to the ground to save an errant throw by Gray Rod in the playoffs and still recorded the out) but that is at least a little interesting.

Some of these choices overall are questionable.  Not just for the Orioles players,  but some overall are head scratching.  But the GG often hasn't really been about good defense, as silly as that sounds.

They are better than they used to be but yea, it's pretty silly.

My favorite was the year in which they listed the winner first out of the finalists when doing the announcement.

Mountcastle has had some surprise moments/plays where he's looked really good at first.  I don't think he's GG caliber but whatever...they've made some glaring mistakes before and that's not his fault. I hope he gets it, that would be good for him.  I hope Hays and AR get it, too.
