I heard the interview on MLB Network. Very impressive. No way I'd let him go. I'd rather trade Kremer and maybe Hays to find another starting pitcher and go with Irvin in the 5 spot, at least until McDermott is ready.

This wasn't an Ortiz situation.  He was given fairly regular playing time for a while.

When they demoted him, were Elias and Co. being "reactionary?"  Or pointing to a small sample size?

1. Keep Cowser, partly to be contrarian but also because a lot of people said that Kjerstad hits from the left side, seemingly to have forgotten that CC does, too. 
 

2. Keep Ortiz. 
 

3. Push. But whatever, keep McDermott. 
 

4. Keep Santander. 
 

5. Keep Basallo. 

6. Keep Urias.

To me, the Cowser/Kjerstad choice is linked to the Hays/Santander choice, at least if we’re talking about the next year or two. 
 

If you keep HK, you prob put him in RF, thereby needing Hays for LF. 
 

If you keep CC then it’s the opposite. 
 

I’m a big Santander fan, perhaps because I overvalue the SH capability. So I’d go Cowser/Santander.

Good points. I chose to keep Santander because the cold spells don’t seem as bad or as prolonged as they do with Hays. I’m also on my phone and too lazy to look if that’s accurate.

I think Cowser is really interesting.  He has more power than people realize.  Some of his homers are absolutely massive.  I think he had at least three this year that were around 450 feet: one in spring training, one in the regular season at Norfolk and one in the AAA championship.  And, he put up a .220 ISO in Norfolk this year, so it’s not a case of just an occasional tape-measure job.  

At the same time, his K rate is higher than I’d like to see.  He struck out 26.8% of the time at Norfolk, basically the same as Kyle Stowers (26.9%) and significantly higher than Kjerstad (20.5%), Mayo (23.2%), Westburg (21.3%) or Ortiz (17.7%).

I do agree with @Moose Milligan that we shouldn’t put too much weight on Cowser’s 77 PA major league audition.

Sure and that’s a good point but I would easily bet on McDermott being an impact starter before Povich.

Cowser did walk 16% of the time, so that helps some and his BABIP was .390 which I think will be hard to sustain.

The only one I would trade out of all the players mentioned is Urias.  So under the rules I couldn't play.

It's amazing how difficult this is for some people.   I don't want to trade Basallo or Mayo but if Elias had to include one in a deal and asked me which one I think I could offer an opinion.  This thread doesn't endorse trading anyone but in a hypothetical situation if you had to choose one of two players.  Most understand the concept.

This is akin to asking wildcard: you have two children in a burning house and you only have time to save one of them.   Which one do you save?   He’s gonna say he has to save both, because he doesn’t like the hypothetical.
