O's have $7,114,800.  (Other ALE teams:  TBR $6,520,000, BOS $5,284,000, TOR $5,152,000, NYY $4,652,200)

The top MLB international prospects for 2023-24

Has anyone seen/heard of any players linked to the O's?

I found a BA article that lists the top ten 2024 international prospects and none are linked to the O’s.  They usually have a top 50 at some point but I don’t see one at this time.

FWIW, we signed Tavera for 1.7M and Soto for around 400K in 2022 and Soto might be better.

In 2023 we signed Almeyda for over 2M and Liranzo for less than 500K and Liranzo might be better.

It’s nice to see the big names attached to the O’s but I’m not too worried either way.

Agreed.  Plus I doubt we’ll ever be connected with a “top 3” guy (or at least very rarely).  Better to scout well and spread the bucket of money around.

Right.  The 3M and 4M players don’t seem to have a high hit rate.  I think I prefer a lot of 400k-500k and the 200K types.

What's a high hit rate?

I'd sure like Ethan Salas, or Jasson Dominguez.

The reason more 200K guys hit might be that we have a lot more of 200K guys.

I think the smart move is to adjust the strategy year to year.  If you get a in on a high end guy you shouldn't be afraid to take a risk.

I see the top names are all Cuban.  Did they even count against the pool?

If not I don't see how they are very relevant to the conversation.

That was  the list.  I thought you’d be smart enough to know that Kevin Maitan at #5 was the top J2 signing that year and filter out the Cubans.

I'm not even smart enough to figure out why you provided the list to begin with.

I asked what constituted a high hit rate.

I'll readily agree that giving a kid 4M doesn't guarantee he'll succeed.

But if the O's manage to get in tight with a high dollar, highly regarded guy at some point, I'm not going dismiss the idea out of hand.  Sometimes spending 5M on one guy is the better move over spreading 5M over a bunch of guys.

To answer the question:  No clue on what's a high hit rate.  Are the $4+m kids like a 1st round pick?  Or like a 5th rounder?  What about the $500k guys?  There's a question of reach as well as evaluation.  The more visible/higher talent levels tend to be bidded up.  Our scouts have to see further and clearer somehow.

I'd like Salas too.  But I think I like Basallo and a few other "more projectable" shots on goal better as a game plan.  Going to an extreme made-up scenario:  1 $5m prospect and 25 $75k prospect vs 1 $2m prospect, 1 $1m guy, 4 $500k guys and 20 $100k guys...

I agree that, if in the right situation, they shouldn't be afraid to take a risk.  And I believe we have seen them move up a bit in the risk-adjusted food chain with Almeyda.  Adding top-shelf talent should be on the table always.

I did a study of this a few years ago, comparing the yield on the high-priced guys, the middle class, and the bargain basement guys.  For what it’s worth:
