Cease vs everyone else

Here's a good article on Cease's struggles last year. https://www.southsidesox.com/2023/10/23/23925118/what-went-wrong-dylan-cease-chicago-white-sox-ace-to-mere-mortal-ethan-katz

In 2023, Cease’s velo was down across the board, which is red flag No. 1. Even if his breaking balls remained exactly the same, a slower fastball (down to 95.6 mph, a significant drop) has compounding consequences throughout the arsenal. The second red flag is that Cease’s slider didn’t remain the same. It was also thrown slower (down 1 mph) and had a shape that was more cutter-ish, meaning more positive vertical break and less of that right-to-left horizontal break that causes right-handed hitters to have nightmares. The pitch displayed less of the abnormal pitch qualities that made it so successful for Cease in 2022.

Cease’s fastball didn’t lose much spin or induced vertical break, which is good. But still, raising your fastball usage while your velocity is down doesn’t seem to make sense — until you realize that his slider was also in flux.

Looking at Cease’s Stuff+, it confirms what result-based stats told us. Each of his four pitch types were worse in 2023, with his fastball representing the lowest drop-off (127 to 125) and his slider representing the largest (a massive drop, from 136 to 120). A 16-point drop in Cease’s slider Stuff+ is a good illustration of the consequences of the velo drop and bad shape change.

Command+ shows that there wasn’t a huge drop with any pitch type, and Cease’s 2023 results didn’t point to any command or control issues. He lowered his walk rate, and threw more first-pitch strikes.

Continuing to tree down to the root of the issues as closely as possible, a glaring detail of Cease’s 2023 season is that his release extension was up two to three inches across the board. He was getting down the mound significantly more, and that seems to be either unintentional, or that it created unintended consequences that hampered his ability to build on his 2022 season.

We wouldn't be. We would be waiting to see how he does and then replace him if needed.

Silly to count on Means? Waiting to see how he Does? Did you did not see how he pitched in (SSS) last year? They should be looking to extend him?

You must have been watching something else because he looked pretty bad to me. Didn't miss any bats, barely could register a strikeout. FIP was almost 3 runs above his ERA (5.24 FIP to 2.66 ERA), only 3.8 K/9. He was able to gut through those starts, but he was definitely not the same guy. You can probably chalk that up to rust and working back from TJS, but then of course he had the elbow soreness to put him back on the shelf for the playoffs.

All of that does not inspire confidence. Do I think he's a 3.8 K/9 pitcher suddenly, no... but I'm also not counting on him to be an ace or even an innings eater next year.

Sounds like the classic situation where the fastball and cutter(slider) start to merge as 1 pitch.  That's the dangers of a cutter, whether he meant to or not.

Yup.   Means is one reason the rotation needs an upgrade.   I'm hopeful that he can get close to his old form, but we can't count on that.

Really? Pitched to a 2.66 era again (SSS) Did Not look good how bout those 6 no hit innings against Cleveland . Guess that was a gut check because he did not strike out 10. I'll make this simple for you. Do you remember the letdown that came with the news  that he would be unavailable for the playoffs, and you would get your choice of Kremer or Gibson for game 3. I remember the letdown and if you don't , I question you're Oriole  Fandom

I think he will have a good year. I am counting on him for about 140 - 150 IP

I’ll be excited to see him throw in ST.  He could very well throw 0IP.  Elbow pain 4 starts after returning from TJ is pretty worrisome.

Kjerstad/Basallo/Norby for Cease??

Sweet Jheeeeeeeeeeeeesus NO!!!!

Potentially the one saving grace is that with the ChiSox ineptitude, maybe none of them develop and it doesn’t bite us in the ass. But still. No. Absolutely not. Under NO circumstances.

Makes me wonder if Elias even had the budget space to sign Kimbrel and Gibson?  Even though Givens, and Frazier, came off the books, everyone else got raises in arb.

Yes, he has the financial flexibility to sign 1-year players to $10m-$15m deals. He has the flexibility to acquire a good SP with several years of control through arbitration. He isn't limited by an additional $3.5m for Jordan Montgomery, he likely just didn't want to part with the same tier of prospects as early as the Rangers made that deal.

There's a significant difference between these type of deals and 4+ year commitments to players in their late 20's/early 30's for $20m+/year.

At ease soldier lol. Of course I was bummed he missed the playoffs. I was hoping with more reps he would start to look more like himself. I understand the ERA he pitched to, that was great. However, the peripherals suggest that with a larger sample, he might have gotten lit up - again, that's depending on whether or not he started to round back into form.

Means is a great pitcher, but the facts are he's coming off a very serious injury and it's not a guarantee that he will be the same guy. Another fact is that he typically misses a chunk of the year with shoulder soreness. So, there's just a lot of question marks with him. When he's healthy and the changeup is working, he's fantastic. I'm not trying to dunk on him or anything, but he's a guy you just can't earmark for 180 innings next season. Something like that would be a best case scenario.

    • Just to be clear, though, fWAR also includes a substantial adjustment for position, including a negative one for Cowser.  For a clearer example on that front, as the chart posted higher on this page indicates, Carlos Santana had a +14 OAA — which is the source data that fWAR’s defensive component is based on. That 14 outs above average equates to 11-12 (they use different values on this for some reason) runs better than the average 1B.  So does Santana have a 12.0 defensive value, per fWAR? He does not. That’s because they adjust his defensive value downward to reflect that he’s playing a less difficult/valuable position. In this case, that adjustment comes out to -11.0 runs, as you can see here:   So despite apparently having a bona fide Gold Glove season, Santana’s Fielding Runs value (FanGraphs’ equivalent to dWAR) is barely above average, at 1.1 runs.    Any good WAR calculation is going to adjust for position. Being a good 1B just isn’t worth as much as being an average SS or catcher. Just as being a good LF isn’t worth as much as being an average CF. Every outfielder can play LF — only the best outfielders can play CF.  Where the nuance/context shows up here is with Cowser’s unique situation. Playing LF in OPACY, with all that ground to cover, is not the same as playing LF at Fenway or Yankee Stadium. Treating Cowser’s “position” as equivalent to Tyler O’Neill’s, for example, is not fair. The degree of difficulty is much, much higher at OPACY’s LF, and so the adjustment seems out of whack for him. That’s the one place where I’d say the bWAR value is “unfair” to Cowser.
    • Wait a second here, the reason he's -0.1 in bb-ref dwar is because they're using drs to track his defensive run value.  He's worth 6.6 runs in defense according to fangraphs, which includes adjustments for position, which would give him a fangraphs defensive war of +0.7.
    • A little funny to have provided descriptions of the hits (“weak” single; “500 foot” HR). FIP doesn’t care about any of that either, so it’s kind of an odd thing to add in an effort to make ERA look bad.  Come in, strike out the first hitter, then give up three 108 MPH rocket doubles off the wall. FIP thinks you were absolutely outstanding, and it’s a shame your pathetic defense and/or sheer bad luck let you down. Next time you’ll (probably) get the outcomes you deserve. They’re both flawed. So is xFIP. So is SIERA. So is RA/9. So is WPA. So is xERA. None of them are perfect measures of how a pitcher’s actual performance was, because there’s way too much context and too many variables for any one metric to really encompass.  But when I’m thinking about awards, for me at least, it ends up having to be about the actual outcomes. I don’t really care what a hitter’s xWOBA is when I’m thinking about MVP, and the same is true for pitchers. Did you get the outs? Did the runs score? That’s the “value” that translates to the scoreboard and, ultimately, to the standings. So I think the B-R side of it is more sensible for awards.  I definitely take into account the types of factors that you (and other pitching fWAR advocates) reference as flaws. So if a guy plays in front of a particular bad defense or had a particularly high percentage of inherited runners score, I’d absolutely adjust my take to incorporate that info. And I also 100% go to Fangraphs first when I’m trying to figure out which pitchers we should acquire (i.e., for forward looking purposes).  But I just can’t bring myself say that my Cy Young is just whichever guy had the best ratio of Ks to BBs to HRs over a threshold number of innings. As @Frobby said, it just distills out too much of what actually happened.
    • We were all a lot younger in 2005.  No one wanted to believe Canseco cause he’s a smarmy guy. Like I said, he was the only one telling the truth. It wasn’t a leap of faith to see McGwire up there and Sosa up there and think “yeah, those guys were juicing” but then suddenly look at Raffy and think he was completely innocent.  It’s a sad story. The guy should be in Hall of Fame yet 500 homers and 3,000 hits are gone like a fart in the wind cause his legacy is wagging his finger and thinking he couldn’t get caught.  Don’t fly too close to the sun.
    • I think if we get the fun sprinkler loving Gunnar that was in the dugout yesterday, I don’t think we have to worry about him pressing. He seemed loose and feeling good with the other guys he was with, like Kremer.
    • I was a lot younger back then, but that betrayal hit really hard because he had been painting himself as literally holier than thou, and shook his finger to a congressional committee and then barely 2 weeks later failed the test.
    • Not bad, but Mullins needs to be at Centerfield for his range, glove, and defensive ability. Top teir premium defense cannot be underestimated. Kjerstad will be on the bench. I think the question is whether Slater or Cowser plays. I would prefer Ramirez over Slater if they need another right handed bat. Sig needs to look at Adleys recent sample sizes vs LHP before making him DH. McCann is catching for Burnes and hitting the left handed pitcher. He's also on a hot streak.
