Cease vs everyone else

Understood, but Seattle’s situation and needs are very different from that of the White Sox. Chicago is years away from contention and will be focusing their energies on acquiring prospects as opposed to players in their prime. The Mariners are already contending in a tough division, and will likely want at least some players who can help them now as opposed to a couple years from now.

If I can acquire a TOR talent like Gilbert by trading a mix of prospects and a couple of our regulars I’d rather do that than get a lesser talent like Cease for prospects alone, especially the prospects Chicago is probably demanding. Or, to put it more specifically— I want to get a premium pitcher without having to include Holliday, Basillo, Mayo, or Kjerstad in the deal. I may be wrong, but I believe that’s more likely working with the Mariners than the White Sox.

There's no way the Mariners are trading Gilbert or Kirby without getting 2 of the O's top prospects.  Young, controllable TOR starters have some of the highest value in the game.

I have some reservations about Mr. Take Me Out After 90 Pitches. Needless to say it has nothing to do with his numbers.

I'm in favor of guys knowing when they've lost effectiveness over guys that want to tough it out and get blown up.

First of all, he never specifically said he was gassed. That's conjecture on your part.

Second, he threw his manager under the bus.

I was speaking in the general, as I often do.

I'd rather have a guy tell his manager he's done than a guy that talks his manager out of pulling him when he's gassed.

Five good innings is pretty much the standard these days.

George Kirby

I don’t know anything about the incident you referenced, but I’m inclined to give Kirby the benefit of the doubt in terms of whether I’d want him on our staff.  He ranked 6th in MLB in IP per start.  If he asked out, I expect he had a reason.

It was actually very soft of him…but it was one incident
