What if Holliday is sent down?

Holliday sent down

  1. 1. What will your reaction be if the Os send Holliday to AAA to start the year?

    • Like it. Gives the team the potential to get the extra year of service time and allows him to work on defense and hitting vs lefties in a lower pressure environment
    • Hate it. He’s one of the best players, so he should be out there
    • Don’t really care either way. Happy with either decision

I want the extra year.  Particularly when it means that Mayo or Cowser could make the team.

If we did not have other great options for our 25 man roster, I would look at it a little differently.

There is too much to gain and too little to lose by sending Holliday down to Norfolk for a few weeks.

He can come up a couple weeks into April and still win ROY. Plenty of guys have won ROY and gotten the extra year of service time. ROY is not a reason to put him on the roster opening day, and it's also not a reason to keep him down until September.

Sure, but we won't get the draft pick if he stays down for a few weeks and then wins ROTY I don't believe.  That's one of the ways that it's supposed to be more enticing to start these guys in the Majors.  It makes no sense to send him down for a few weeks to gain the service time... he could gain it back and we actually lose out in the long run.

And so what happens if you send him down for a few weeks and he still wins?  Or comes in second like Adley did?  You're back to square one.

It would be criminally stupid to give up a year of prime Holliday for 2 weeks of his age 20 season.  I just can't see Elias making that trade off.

How about we send him down  for two weeks and he comes back up and wins the ROY?   Then, no extra year or draft pick.

He doesn't go down for 2 weeks.  He's down a month.

Okay.  He still gains a full service year this year if he places top two in ROY.  How confident are you that won’t happen?

Confident enough to roll the dice.

You don't get the draft pick if he isn't on OD roster.  Look, I'm not basing my decision on this alone, but to me it's icing on the cake of a whole bunch of other reasons to have him on the OD roster.

A draft pick is not more valuable than a 7th season of Holliday in his prime…whether it’s because he’s playing for us or we trade him because we can’t sign him.

That extra year is extremely valuable.

I think he needs to be down for 8-10 weeks to avoid the scenario of him getting back the service time.

That's right and maybe a touch longer to ensure he doesn't get ROY top two and get the extra time anyway.  If he is ripping the league apart the front office will be getting blasted for keeping him in AAA.

I thought that prior.  I think 4-6.  There's still a risk, but it's worth it imo.
