Brandon Hyde 2024

Sure, use the low leverage guys more.   Then there will be a million posts complaining about how Hyde used Baumann or Ramirez instead of Coulombe or Cano.   The answer is that Elias has to get better low leverage guys.   If Hyde has 5-7 guys that he trusts (and we trust) he’ll get the high leverage guys more days off.    With Bradish, Means, and later Wells, I think there’s a chance to achieve that.   We need to get Kimbrel healthy and pitching like he was the first 3 weeks and then manage his workload better.

I do think Hyde overworked Bautista last year but I wasn’t complaining while he was doing it.  It was winning us games.

Exactly. As I said before things will even themselves out over time. You have stretches with a bunch of high leverage games and then you don’t.

I thought Hyde said he was unavailable due to a stomach bug.

I didn’t see that.  If he was on the bench (I don’t know) I’d guess he’d be well enough to play for an inning or two.  Otherwise, why be there?

He wasn’t available. I doubt he was around the team.

IMO Hyde lost the game today.  Not Burnes.  Burnes has very obviously been 'off' the past 2 games.  Something has been wrong.  IMO you change it up and pitch someone else in the 9th.   He probably could have thrown a dart at the available pitchers for the 9th inning and the O's would have won 9 x out of 10.

Just a bad feel for for the inning, the game, the situation, and the pitcher in this case on Hyde's part.

Obviously I meant Kimbrel here.   In fairness I was about 10 adult beverages in last night when I made this post.

Let that be a lesson here boyos.  Don't drink and post.  :)

My point still stands though.  Bad game management on Hyde's part.

So you're wiser than the O's medical staff? You have better info than they do? For all you know Westburg is continuously hurling chunks in the clubhouse.

Must have been really bad

A positive Hyde comment... I liked the bullpen management tonight. He could have held Cano out for the 9th but instead brought him in for the middle of the order after Perez got the lefty Soto. Instead the save went to Coulombe who was able to get mostly favorable matchups and Soto-Judge-Rizzo never got to hit again.

Some wanted Webb to start the 9th, but if he had got into trouble you could have potentially had Webb facing Soto, or if Coulombe is brought in for Soto, he would be forced to pitch to Judge. Instead, by extending Cano for one batter, you had Coulombe with favorable matchups, plus Webb waiting for Judge if needed. Perfectly played.

Bottom of the 8th:

Leadoff man singles. RHP on the mound.

Why not pinch hit O’Hearn or Kjersted as opposed to attempting sacrifice bunt?
Even if you successfully sacrifice, you are not improving your odds of scoring a run in the inning.

On 1st, 0 out probability of scoring - 42.6%
On 2nd, 1 out probability of scoring - 41.4%

Not sure how bunting there is the play in Sig’s analytics.

Any reason why Hyde didn't pinch hit for Mateo on Friday night in the 8th, up 3-0 vs RHO with Cowser available to hit and Urias for defense? I believe there was a similar situation with Kjerstad on the bench vs NYY. Does Hyde just value the defense that much with the lead?

No need to use 2 players in that situation when you are in the lead.
