It has to be up there in baseball history (ok, not counting stuff like high school or little league), because the organization of high level baseball is such that there hasn't been a significant spread in talent in over a century. If you put all of the WBC teams in a league and had them play a season the Americans and the Dominicans and the Cubans would win 100+ games, and the Dutch and the South Africans would be lucky to get into the 30s or 40s. Last time you had pro baseball teams in the US with matchups like that was in the 1880s and 1890s.

The Dominican team might be a favorite to win any of the current MLB divisions. The Dutch team would be right at home in the Atlantic League, or probably a pretty good Carolina League squad.

In other sports, notably college, this kind of thing happens pretty frequently. Maybe on the level of a 15-2 seed in the basketball tourney. Or Appy State over Michigan.

It's the beating them twice part that really takes the cake. Sure any one can beat anyone else on any given day, but to do it twice... that's where it starts to get impressive.

And I get what you're saying Drungo, but the Netherlands pitching has been great the entire series. Just 3 games, yes, but they have faced 3 extremely potent offenses and held them to just 6 runs in 3 games. It's their offense that's pretty bad. Scratch that, terrible.

So I guess we'll have to agree, but I think they might be better than we're giving them credit for, since their pitching has been tremendous.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how they do the next round.

I am guessing Boom Boom Dixon is still sulking? :P

Surprised (like everybody), but not sulking. First and foremost, I like to see good games.

I hope Eugene Kingsale & company keep playing solid ball.

One stat for the DR: Their team ERA in the WBC was 0.31 and they're already out.

Felipe Alou sounded worried about the offense even before the tournament started. Let's just hope a Yankees lineup without A-Rod struggles as badly as the DR.

    • We will be good next year too.
    • Only browser I use on all my devices. I Pad\Phone, android tablet and lap top. Works great. Don't tell anyone else.聽 Don't want to overwork a good thing.聽 馃槃
    • I'm not talking about writing them off. But I am certainly not for believing that any of those three is going to be a number 2 or 3 starter and pitch us through multiple rounds and on to the World Series. That would be sort of the definition of "magical thinking". Bradish, before he got hurt was able to go pitch for pitch against Suarez and keep their offense in check. I think it would be foolish to expect that kind of performance on the biggest stage (October baseball) of Kremer, Irvin, Povich, or Suarez. None of them COMBINED have ever been anything like that before. That doesn't mean that they can't help the team, but not as a credible/suitable replacement for Bradish.
    • I have seen nothing from Mike Elias in the last half decade that makes me think he would make a significant trade of his cherished prospect capital within the division.聽 And Luzardo has "Erik Bedard" written all over him, IMO. This year's SP trade market kind of sucks.
    • Shame. Losing him will stink.聽
    • I agree with the underlined. But there is a visible/palpable difference in the talent of the two team's bullpens. It goes beyond Hoffman and Strahm IMO. Just look at who the two teams turned to after the rain delay (in the 11th). Of course, Webb has a much better ERA currently, but who is the much better pitcher? For me it is talent (top end) that wins in the postseason and depth that wins in the regular season. We have more depth than anyone. But right now what we lack is top end talent in our bullpen. We have to accept/face the truth that the Yankees and Phillies are better at the back end right now. But that's okay because it's still early June and we have time to catch up. But you have to acknowledge a problem before you can address it, not pretend like it doesn't exists.聽
    • It didn鈥檛 seem like he had inside information. It seemed equivalent to posters on this board talking like they know Bradish is seriously hurt. When a pitcher with a recently rehabbed UCL strain leaves a game early with elbow discomfort, it鈥檚 not a good sign. However, I think Hays comments simply reflect that reality and don鈥檛 imply incremental bad news beyond the facts already known.
