The 2024 Trade Deadline

Civale had a sub 4 era in 2022 and 2023, with a similar fip to suggest it wasn’t just luck. If you think that’s who he is rather than this 2024 version, then a lottery ticket international player in a ball seems like a worth while price to see if you can get him back to prior year form. Sure, bencosme or however you spell it would be fine too, but for a guy who has a legitimate chance to help us down the stretch for a guy who may have a 30% chance of ever making the majors?

Right now we’re relying on Irvin to rebound, Suarez to hold up, and kremer to be the back end of our rotation. Not sure how cobble is somehow a downgrade on them giving us important innings. Again, for the price, that’s an upside trade I’d make all day.

Civale has some value at 1.5 seasons left.  He also gets out of the AL East.  I expect we'll see some positive regression for him.  He's a fine regular season #4/#5 type.

We need to start thinking of arms, especially SP, as regular season guys that can get you through a 162 game season vs. guys you want being one of your 3 playoff SP.

Irvin, Suarez, Povich, Kremer, and even McDermott, are fine regular season options to get us through 162.  This year and next.  Couple those names with re-signing Burnes, along with a healthy Grayson, and with this lineup, you're going to win 90-100+ games a year.

I’m hoping we can get guys like this if we offload Hays and Urias. (Assuming we can’t get ML ready help)

Rays are always picking up these relatively low rated prospects and a lot of them turn into something.  Like when the O's traded Tobi Wells (??) to the Rays and they turned around and traded him to the Guardians for Caminierio (sp?) and he's now a top 5 prospect.  Wells is still floundering around in the upper minors last I heard.

Well, that’s not necessarily true.

They may have been able to get more of a  “sure thing” prospect but wanted the higher upside instead.

TB isn’t stupid. They wanted this kid for a reason.

Peospect rankings are overrated. MLB (which isn’t good) has him 21st..same spot they have Liranzo for us and no way Liranzo is our 21st best prospect..just like Fabian isn’t our 12th best prospect.

Said another way, Barrios was almost certainly on the Rays internal ranking of the Brewers top 20 prospects.

Ha. You mean Tobias Myers and he’s having a bit of a breakout year with the Brewers.   Turned out horribly for the Guardians.

Resigning Burnes is a long shot at this point. And getting 1.5 years of a viable 4/5 for the cost of a 40 fv player in a ball when we’ve had multiple starter injuries is good business to me. Not as our key move at the deadline, but for depth. If I could get civale for one of those guys then go get a #3 behind Grayson also, I’m all for it. Obviously too late now, but that also strengthens the pen if you can move Suarez back to a bp role.

Wow, that's a surprise.  I read something last year that he was thinking about quitting baseball.  I read in the article about his debut with the Brewers he had been with 4 organizations since the Guardians.  Good to see someone like that have success.  I'm sure someone will start a thread "I can't believe we gave up Tobias Myers I knew he would be great"

He was available in the Rule 5.  No one took him.

Well if he's not a finished product defensively, it doesn't make sense to sacrifice defense to such a degree when Holliday moving to the outfield makes the Orioles a better team on both sides of the ball until Holliday IS a finished product, whenever that may be.

Center field is a far more premium position than 2B. Holliday should want to make that move, not only because the organization has a more pressing need for depth in CF and the team would win more games with Holliday at CF and Westburg at 2B/3B, but also because it increases his own value as a player for his first big contract in free agency.

I can agree with you that Holliday moving to center would be a great development for the roster makeup.  I do believe though that he is a Scott Boras client. With so many young players on the 40 man being represented by Boras, I wonder if they would force a move to the outfield for Holliday if he didn't want to make the switch.

Sadly, these types of politics probably play a part of decision making by front offices.

To me, Westy does not possess the lateral quickness for CF.  And his throwing motion is too short-armed for OF and would need to be reworked.

Lateral quickness?   What does that even mean?   Cowser can turn and run.  I would imagine that Westburg can turn and run as well.   Infielders typically use a shorter arm motion to get rid of the ball quicker.   Westburg wouldn’t be the first guy to lengthen his arm motion for more carry.

Assuming the Jays are out of it and looking to start over, I’d be in the camp for trading for Gausman.  Not sure if his year would give us a shot out procuring him w/o trading the “untouchable” prospects, but his home and away splits make him very attractive.  He is pitching to about a 6 ERA and just below 2 WHIP in the Skydome while sporting a sub 2 ERA and sub 1 WHIP on the road.   He is owed around $57M through the 2026 season.  I’m a little leery of trading in the division but with the unbalanced schedule a thing of the past, this worry may be a bit overblown.

Gausman looks done. I hope to God they stay away from him. What a difference a year makes.

A poor man’s Mateo must be one broke MFer.

So we think. Mateo has an outside shot at landing some good Util money when he eventually hits the FA marker. He’s making 2.7 million this year and he’s on pace for a 2.0 WAR season. That puts him around 4-5 million in his final arb season.

Also, Vespi might get dealt around the deadline as a third piece type. For the general thread.
