Did you expect anything different?

6 hours away from the deadline and several better places to complain about Elias' deficiencies on the board, I was hopeful.

He knew in the off-season about Means and Bradish. Neither were available in the spring. If he did t anticipate they wouldn’t be pitching, that’s poor planning. Also why it’s important to not put all your eggs in one basket.

Irvin suddenly forgetting how to pitch is really the big problem here.

When Means and Bradish went down, Snell and Montgomery were the best signings still available. Both have stunk it up this year.

This still doesn't speak to the bullpen management.

In no way was it a reasonable expectation that Kimbrel could give you the elite production of Bautista as a one-for-one replacement.

Other than Kimbrel, we effectively did nothing to cover for the Bautista sized hole at the end of games. Last season, we could live with a shaky middle relief because of how lockdown Bautista was. There were multiple games where we used Bautista to cover 5 outs, effectively using Cano and Bautista to handle from the 7th on. Now we not only have ineffective middle relief but our backend is shaky too.

This was a problem that Stevie Wonder should have been able to see coming.

How do you suggest we could have replaced Bautista? Bautista is a unicorn. He got injured. Kimbrel was a solid move. I don't think anyone expected he would replace Bautista.

As it is, we have plenty of assets to get another bullpen arm. See how Seranthony does and who else we get by 6pm. I believe we will get someone.

They seem to think they are trying hard to get a deal done with Skubal on the radio

That is finding fault in him.

Different topic. I spoke about his drafting style and how it can show a chink in his armor. It's part of what you're saying as well with depth.

There was not a single bullpen arm that could do that. But had you attempted to pick up 2 good bp arms that would have been a help, no?

Damn, some selling teams gained a ton. I think Scott for MIA is probably going to command a huge return with all the teams in on him or he'd have been gone.

Snell appears to be rounding into form at just the right time.

Elias knew that Bradish was hurt. Burnes was the move to replace Bradish. Elias also knew that Means was having a lot of setbacks.

There’s a thread from the offseason in November where we talked about how Wells couldn’t hold up a season as a SP.

This ain’t rocket science. Elias could’ve just re-signed Gibson.

Suarez was a band aid to get us to the deadline. Now we’re going to the to pay more than anyone thought for Anderson or Flaherty 2.0.

It will be hilarious when we’ve had to trade 6 players for like 22 starts of Jack Flaherty, but I hope we do it. We need one more SP.

And could we have paid them with the Burnes deal too?

I agree, I am quite certain that if we acquire Scott we are not going to like what it took to get him.

Still, I think you have to make a play for him or someone similar.

By 26'? That's Adley's 5th season and Gunnar's fourth. That sounds like what some are arguing against which is "going for it in one season". And if 26' doesn't work out then what?

Also, your use of the term "upgrade" is a little strong for me. IMO we improved the rotation a little. (But let's face it, we had nowhere to go but up since some of the pitchers that we were running out there aren't even Major league starters - i.e. Irving/Suarez/McDermott/Povich). And we improved the bullpen a little.

By no means do the additions of Eflin and Dominguez solve this team's pitching problems.

I agree that Mayo, Basallo, and Holliday will improve the lineup in a few seasons, most likely in a significant way. But I just don't believe that you can out slug each opponent in the tournament. That's not usually what postseason success is built on.

I would love to hear your plan on the realistic rotation and bullpen additions that make us significantly better this winter.

I am not interested in arguing about the meaning of the word upgrade vs improve.

By no means did I say the additions of Elfin and Dominguez solve this team's pitching problems.

I think there is a chance that we extend Burnes. The fact that the O's just took on 18 million for Elfin next year suggests that is at least a realistic possibility.

I also think it is reasonable to expect that some of our top hitting talent gets extended.

A one-year commitment to a SP is radically different than the extension Burnes is looking for. Boras is going to want to test the boundaries IMO.

A little surprised there wasn’t more activity in the morning across the league. Curious if there’s something holding it all up and then a bunch of dominoes will fall after.

My guess is it’s Crochet - I don’t see the Dodgers ending today without Crochet or Flaherty. If they can’t get Crochet, they’ll probably have a 50 FV prospect on the table for Flaherty that nobody else wants to top.

Yankees seem to want Flaherty and then to trade Cortes, that’s pretty complicated to accomplish if it’s not coming together soon. And it could be that their offer for Scott is contingent on what they get for Cortes.

    • It is my firm belief that the Orioles are suffering from an organizational flaw.  Mainly in their hitting and fielding instruction.  Mainly at the lower levels.  I actually believe that their pitching metrics and instruction are good.  It is just that they never draft enough pitchers to fully realize the fruits of their labor and the good minor league pitchers that they do have?  They don't extend and pitch enough.  It seems as if they are always being babied.  So other teams snatch them up in trades because they see the potential and they tend do pretty well with them afterwards.  Without having to do really anything other than a few tweeks.  Imo the Orioles hitting and fielding instruction has a big flaw.  There is a major disconnect between what they are teaching in the minor leagues and how that translates to the major leagues.  For example 2 players in Mayo and Holliday appear to be complete novices when it comes to hitting major league pitching.  This despite doing very well in the minors.  I could list others as well but those are the 2 prime examples.  They are not just bad.  They are almost historically bad.  Especially when you add it the fact they are top ranked players in the minors.  In addition I believe that Manager Hyde has no business coaching a major league team trying to win a world series.  He is fine as a placard when there is a team that is supposed to tank.   He can keep things on a fairy level keel.    Like the Orioles from 2017 to 2021.  But his approach as a manager in getting a team to be disciplined and focused on taking that next step to the playoffs and beyond is severely lacking imo.  The Orioles play very poor fundamental baseball in all facets.  Hitting.  Running.  Fielding.  Pitching.    That is simply coaching 101.   I sincerely hope that the Orioles brass understands this and makes the proper moves this coming off season.
    • The poster child for the old school approach has struck out 26 times in 632 plate appearances.  He's hitting .322, his OPS+ is 109.
    • He was good in the pen last year. He had a 7.71 ERA in the pen this year and an 8.08 ERA overall the last 3 months.
    • In 2008, the MLB average was .264.  Today it’s .244.   It’s very tough to hit .300 these days.  in 2008 there were 41 players with 400 PA who hit .300.  Right now the 41st player with 350 PA (lowered since there’s still 12ish games to play) is batting .273.    Maybe some part of that is offenses deemphasizing BA.   The bigger part, IMO, is that pitching just keeps getting harder and harder to hit.
    • Sure, but let's be real, he isn't the team's best power hitter. You didn't need to talk him up like that.
    • I cannot say I am a fan of this move by the O's (being available to be claimed) considering the scrubs they have started recently.   At the very least he was a good middle reliever.
    • I can’t speak to recently, but on the year, the O’s have the 6th-fewest looking strikeouts in MLB.   They’ve struck out looking 270 times, and league average is 300.   (Interestingly, through yesterday there were exactly 9,000 looking strikeouts in MLB this year.)
