DSL Orioles 2024

This post probably guarantees that 17 yo catcher Adriander Mejia strikes out in his next game. The 2nd year player sports a .940 OPS in the early going with ZERO strikeouts in 38 PA.   That’s unusually good.   Last year he threw out 45% of 38 attempted steals.   This year, 4 of 8 for 50%.   That’s also unusually good for this level.

I’m use to looking at top prospects like Almeyda, Tavera, Maikol struggle at this level. Early on this is by far the best DSL team I’ve followed.

The A team has 8 out of the 9 batters all OPSing 800 or higher. Jordan Sanchez looks like a stud.

So far, so good.  He’s 18, so while it’s still really good, a little grain of salt.  Most of the top guys excel at 16-17 in the DSL but I don’t think putting up great numbers at 18-19 means you can’t become a top prospect.  Unlike the Dominicans and Venezuelans, Sanchez is from Cuba, signed at 18, and they chose to start him here instead of the tougher FCL.

We also have some guys like Jose Mejia, Adriander Mejia, and Guevera, who put up good numbers in the DSL last year but were sent back for whatever reasons.  Each of those guys look to be doing real well plus Felix Amparo and others as repeat players.

I’m slightly more excited about the first year players like Elvin Garcia, Campuzano, Stiven Martínez.   Hopefully, Emilio Sánchez and Jemone Nuel get it going soon.

It’s important to consider the changes in roster rules - 15 fewer players allowed to be in org stateside vs last year.  That’s on top of elimination of short season leagues a few years ago.

In 2017, a player repeating DSL or starting in DSL as 18-year old would be a sign that the team is not super high on their potential.  Many top J2 prospects skipped the DSL entirely. That’s much less likely to be the case in 2024.

The 18-year olds results should still be taken with a grain of salt, but the fact that they are still in the DSL isn’t as damning as it would have been a decade ago.

Did they choose or was it a passport/visa thing? Remember he signed late last year and has only been with the team for a few months.

Obviously,  I have no idea.  Could be a visa thing.

The boys are having a little contest.  Let’s keep track.

Adriander Mejia - no strikeouts in his first 42 PA.

Felix Amparo - no strikeouts in his first 33 PA.

Kind of the converse of what McCann did at the star of the year.

Another day of good hitting in the DSL. Jordan Sanchez is now hitting .400 with 10 XBH in 40 AB’s. Elvin Garcia is now hitting .433 with 4 SB.

Jordan Sanchez is 10th in the league in OPS among qualifiers and Elvin Garcia is 11th.  Both are striking out less than 20% rate.  Looking good.

Lots of strong starts by both newcomers and repeaters.   Looks like a few more interesting pitchers than in the past too.  Emilio Sanchez had a strong game today and it would be nice if our highest bonus player in the 2024 class put a nice streak together.
