I remember a few years back what a shock it was to start seeing guys with birthdates in the 2000s, especially to an old guy like me who grew up thinking of the year 2000 as the distant future.

Now the Mariners just took a guy born in 1999 and my first thought seeing that number in the DOB column was wow, that guy is old!

I would like to see them draft one high school player this year. I’m doubtful.

They will take few rounds 10-20. Usually one will be insurance in negotiations and that we probably won’t sign.

We’ve only averaged like one or two a year…and haven’t always signed them.

Lott and Ritchie in 2023 - did not sign

holiday and showalter in 2022 - both signed

creed in 2021 - signed

2020 - mayo and baumler (shortened draft - both signed)

Prep players just isn’t a part of Elias’s strategy. Too much risk I expect?

I should have been more specific—draft and sign one high school player. The only two they have drafted and signed in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 drafts are Holliday and Willems.

I forgot about Showalter.

I think it’s risky to avoid an entire demographic because of risk. Henderson, Holliday, and Mayo, three of our best prospects over the past few years were high school players.

This tells you all you need to know in the age old question of whether they use data or scouting. I know it's never 100/0, but the O's are very squarely on the data side (much more available in college), which is funny given their successes with Mayo and Henderson.

This draft is supposed to be very thin talent wise, I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of HS kids like Schmidt are going to bet on themselves in college. O's just took a HS SS, btw.

Apparently, they’ll make an exception but not very often.  Lol
