DJ is from around here, have saw him play a few times.  He is a great athlete with some tools.  He can pick it well with good footwork and quick release and  average to slightly above arm strength.  H

@Jim'sKid26 Because you are easily confused, or you just don't read well, it was a joke that he has mound upside, because as I'm sure you are fully aware Givens was a failed position player (SS) converted to the mound I hope that clears up your confusion, I hate to bewilder people.

I have watched him play in multiple tournaments and during his high school years. I think his arm is better than you describe. Would grade him as solid above average with a chance to be even better with a bit of work on his footwork and positioning. He hasn't received the elite level coaching (no offense to the Charlotte Christian Coach) to nearly the extent some of these big school kids get. Solid bat. If they can sign him away from So Miss I'll be surprised, but very happy for him and his family.

Why the attack? I didn't give you a down vote. Seems a bit harsh to insult my cognition and my reading comprehension. But please forgive me if you feel slighted in any way. It was not my intention.

I am well aware of Givens journey through the Orioles player development program. But thank you for the primer.  I see very little else that is similar between Givens and DJ Layton. It seems to me that many prep pitchers find themselves playing SS when they are not on the mound. Especially the good athletes. Might be a coincidence, it's hard to know.

I am sure they know the number to sign him since they took him as an over slot guy, unless he changes that number I expect him to sign.

Yeah.  This certainly sounded like he expected to sign.

I never imagined that this kid who ran the bases in Camden Yard when he was nine would be paid to run them years later.

I coached against him in HS. Very good hands defensively and has gotten stronger in the last few years. Only saw him hit righty vs us but seems to handle FB and offspeed well with very quick hands. He’ll need some time in the minors to get stronger and make adjustments to ++ pitching, but if he can continue his upwards trend in hitting, he’s a very good pick that should develop in a few years.

Maybe that's all it would have taken to make Mark Teixeira an O's fan.  I just can't let go...

      Betting odds at fox sports and Vegas insiders has him between -550 and -650 in the last 2-3 days. I am 1000000% not a gambler, but Googling betting odds translation says that implies about an 85% odds. Gil going on the IL certainly doesn’t hurt.

      Cowser went from contact to touching first base in 112 clicks (3.73 seconds), a rate of 24.1 FPS which is lower than his sprint speed since it involved both acceleration and deceleration (on the slide). It was nice to have LHP Valdez falling off to the wrong side of the mound, which effectively eliminated the chance he could cover.  Singleton let a slowly-hit ball come to him, which would have been sufficient against the vast majority of the league, but is terrible technique. What folks don't seem to be talking about is how much time Cowser cost himself with a badly mistimed slide (way too early).  We almost had a scene like that from 1 of the Major League movies where Hayes comes up about 3 feet short of 2nd base and the fielder waves him on into his tag.  I'm not someone who says sliding into 1B is never optimal unless to avoid a tag, but he cost himself time on this one. One other point...the contrast of styles from the booth was absolutely wonderful... Jim Palmer responds to every defensive miscue with a groan ("You gotta be kidding me..."), even those of the opponents, as if he was personally betrayed by Singleton. I laugh every time he does it on an opposing error. Brown was euphoric and captured the excitement of Orioles fans everywhere with his call. McDonald was analytic, citing WHY Singleton had been late to the bag. It was great TV, made greater and more broadly circulated by Holliday's 3-run double on the next pitch.  They should have these 3 in the booth together more often.

      I was watching MLB Tonight and they were discussing who was in the Top 10 Living Players (position players and pitchers).  They had Ohtani #1.  Which I think is ridiculous and 98% percent based on OMG he hits and pitches.  I thought it would be cool to see everyone's lists but break it into position players and pitchers (I guess Ohtani would go on position players).  1.  Bonds 2.  Griffey 3.  Schmidt 4.  Trout 5.  Henderson 6.  Johnny Bench 7.  Albert Pujols 8.  Cal Ripken 9.  A Rod 10.  Frank Thomas Too soon for me to rank Ohtani and Judge, who is probably about to win his 2nd MVP and hit 60 HR for the 2nd time. I'm probably unfairly biased towards guys I actually saw.  There's probably some great guy in the 1960's I totally snubbed.

      And the win over Jackson Jobe. 3 of the strikeouts were consecutive in the 2nd inning after a leadoff double. Walks were consecutive too to middle of the lineup guys in 4th inning, first one to the guy who had doubled off him.

      Tonight was my first time seeing him in person, and I've always in my head heard his name Sam-u-el, but it sounded like the Bowie PA announcer was pronuncing Basallo's first name the way Juan Samuel's last name sounds. Jackson Jobe did stay in third time through the order for three matchups. PA1 was the double, a bloop towards the right center gap the RF couldn't get.     The AA RF perhaps had a longer way to go as Basallo needs playing deep, the kind of hits fearsome sluggers kind of "deserve" but I think a good MLB outfielder catches it. PA2 was a decently solidly hit fly foul down the LF line where the outfielder I guess made a nice play outside the line - we couldn't see end of play from 3B side. PA3 was 2 on, 2 out, and Jobe got him to roll over to the 2B for a 4-3 on the 2nd pitch. All three PA were quick - 3, 4 and 2 pitches by my notes. He saw a reliever in the 8th inning when he picked up the walk.
