Soto entered the game with a 2 outs and a man on first and a 1-0 lead. He threw 28 pitches and gave up 4 hits and a walk and allowed 5 runs to score.

If our pitchers weren't dropping like flies I'm wondering if this should be his last time on the mound for us.

I could have done just as good for a lot less money.

I don’t get why he’s in a close game at the moment. He’s been struggling. He has good upside and is a power arm but you need to put him in situations like they have been with Kimbrel.

You can’t hide everyone pitching in low leverage situations when you’re in a pennant race.  The 6th inning man on 1st and two outs is pretty low leverage.  It was 3 of the next 4 hitters being left handed so you want to go with a lefty, because lefty’s are 22 for 62 at .356 vs Smith on the year.  You don’t want him facing the middle of their lineup and a bunch of left handed hitters up.

Then pitch Perez there

Ok 3 out of next 4 were LH, and youve got Soto ready to spell Smith, Hoe come Hyde had no one backing Soto up? could have kept it 3-1. 2runs down instead of 4 changes the game a little bit.

Coming into today:

In his last 5 appearances, he has pitched 3.1 IP. He had given up 8 ER, walked 3 and given up 9 hits. It took him 99 pitches to get through those 3.1 innings but yea, the data supports it.

Soto is definitely struggling.  Thowing 98/99 doesn't guarantee success.  He probably needs to be an inning ending LOOGY, or pitch in mop up, until he gets straightened out.  Akin should be up today.  He'll be the 2nd leverage guy with Perez.

Is Coloumbe coming back or is that a pipe dream?

Leave Smith in. There were righties coming up. And Soto isn’t pitching well and hasn’t for the O’s, so you can’t automatically trust him like Hyde has.

He's a good arm and he'll be fine and contribute to this club, need to have patience and let him work through this in low leverage situations. For now Perez in situations like last night.

This is my take as well. I'm not sure what's wrong with him but he has too good of a track record to be this bad.

That is exactly how Hyde deployed him but he didn't get the job done.
