Remember-Elias traded Tanner Scott 2 years ago for garbage. Good drafter. Horrible GM when it comes to trades.

BUT THE FACT THAT THIS TRADE HAS NOT BEEN BROUGHT UP MORE OFTEN AS A COMPLETE DISASTER, ESPECIALLY AFTER SO MANY WANTED TO TRADE BACK FOR HIM THIS WEEK?

You have done an admirable job making up for loss time and opportunities in this thread alone.  Well done, sir.  Well done.

No.  I it is you.  I am spot on.  Trying to spin a false narrative and making the person who doesn't believe the narrative the 'bad guy'.

Gaslighting is an insidious form of manipulation and psychological control. Victims of gaslighting are deliberately and systematically fed false information that leads them to question what they know to be true, often about themselves. They may end up doubting their memory, their perception, and even their sanity.

Honestly, this might be my favorite thread now. Just a dadaist masterpiece

That was because of the top 3.  Besides that....who is rated highly

This is not a serious thread. The revisionist history is a blast and all, but come on. Seriously. Tanner Scott was not a good pitcher in 2022. He was atrocious in 2021. He was not going to make the team. He was 26 and had been given 4 years to showed he belonged. He was not a prospect anymore by any rational definition of the word. He struck out guys but couldn’t stop walking them. You keep referring to K’s per 9 like it’s the only stat that matters. It doesn’t matter for much when he’s also walking 6 per 9 IP. That’s basically Daniel Cabrera. Bullpen versions of Daniel Cabrera don’t have value. That they were able to get anything for 2022 Tanner Scott is great.

Some guys just figure it out after a change of scenery and it took Scott two more years to figure it out. I’m glad for him that he did. He’s going to make a lot of money this fall. But it’s not really fair to criticize the Orioles for giving up on a player they have many chances to. And criticizing them for not developing him when they have a long track record of turning other organizations’ trash relievers into gold is disingenuous. But I kinda feel like this entire thread is just you venting because you didn’t like the trade deadline so you’re nitpicking with other decisions so that you can declare Elias a failure.

What would have been horrible?

Not giving Bautista the roster spot over Tanner, who has only been been good this year. The walks in the playoffs will not and never would have worked. Plus he would need to consult Flaherty’s shrink coming back to an ex.

I wouldn't take any other GM in baseball over Elias.  Period.  Especially given the constraints he is under.  It's relatively easy to be the GM of a big market team like the Dodgers.  You can buy a great team there.  Would you rather have the Mets GM??

I am a big Colts fan.  Maybe bigger than I am an Os fan.    I said the same things I said about Colts GM Chris Ballard 7 years ago that I do about Elias.  They are good drafters but both risk adverse and poor traders.

The Colts have not won a division title since he came on board 8 years ago.  Let alone a SB.

I will leave it at that.

Here's an "oldsters' opinion. This OP was started with an in your face discriptor, "garbage," coupled with a dramatic and totally false labeling of our GM for affect. "Horrible" is way out of bounds IMO. In my view, it's done to generate attention and generally is sussessful. On a site that prides itself demanding, back it up with statistics, this is the anti thread. Yet it keeps going on and on and admittedly I am guilty as well by even writing this. I just however have to say I marvel at the twists and turns over 6 pages now and how many of you think reason could possibly prevail or just feel the need for the last word. Carry on and good luck.

Again, stay on topic.  Please just tell me who besides SB, JH, and CM are rated highly in the Os farm system?  Bradford?  And please don't mention any pitchers.  Of which there are basically none.   We are pretty barren outside of those guys.

So it was Bautista or Tanner?  That was the only choice?

Just because you disagree with my opinion doesn't mean I am doing it for "attention" as you put it.

I could care less about that.

What is more important is why  the media and the fans have let Elias get away with one of the worst trades in Os history.   Even in the trade thread this year...............no one mentioned that we literally gave Tanner away 2 years ago.  But many were very eager to give the Marlins a top prospect....or two....for the very guy that was just given away.

It is a very odd spin to say the least.

TLDR

Scott wasn't this good when the O's traded him, and he wasn't trending upwards. What am I missing here

What do you consider trending up?

In 2019, Scott appeared in 28 games only and posted an ERA of 4.78 in 26+13 innings with 37 strikeouts. In 2020 for the Orioles, Scott pitched to a superb 1.31 ERA to go along with 23 strikeouts in 20+23 innings pitched over 25 games.

Nothing, Scott wasn't even average. He couldn't find a spot on a poor team's bullpen even when given countless chances. Current Bryan Baker>Tanner Scott at the time of the trade. And Baker could be released today and it wouldn't bother me.

    • Speaking of that, look up Adley's splits. He's literally elite batting right handed. His numbers are fantastic. Maybe it's time for him go full time righty.
    • Which is kind of crazy when you think about it.  It is just getting a hit every 3 out of 10 at bats.   In any other sport that is a FAIL.  Pitching is much better these days with the creation of the specialty reliever but still it seems ridiculous that no one can hit .300.
    • One thing I have never understood about the Anthony switch hitting is he seems like a 100% better hitter hitting left handed compared to right handed.  To me it is night and day.  Now I don't know the exact numbers but I just see the way he swings.  He swings a lot better as a lefty compared to a right handed hitter.  He has had a really good season but it may be time for him to do a Mullins and swing just as a lefthander.
    • True.  But he came through enough when the Os have really needed a guy this year.  Any guy.  I don't believe it is a huge loss but at the same time I don't think he was a throwaway either.  Which is what I believe the Orioles thought he was and is.
    • One of the hitting coaches talked publicly about Santander's process (which involves some degree of guessing, like he sits on a particular pitch until he gets it) and then he went into a bit of a slump. Not sure that was actually related, but it at least makes me wonder. Generally I don't expect strategies to be made public.
    • It is my firm belief that the Orioles are suffering from an organizational flaw.  Mainly in their hitting and fielding instruction.  Mainly at the lower levels.  I actually believe that their pitching metrics and instruction are good.  It is just that they never draft enough pitchers to fully realize the fruits of their labor and the good minor league pitchers that they do have?  They don't extend and pitch their young guys enough.  It seems as if they are always being babied.  So other teams snatch them up in trades because they see the potential and they tend do pretty well with them afterwards.  Without having to do really anything other than a few tweeks.  Imo the Orioles hitting and fielding instruction has a big flaw.  There is a major disconnect between what they are teaching in the minor leagues and how that translates to the major leagues.  For example 2 players in Mayo and Holliday appear to be complete novices when it comes to hitting major league pitching.  This despite doing very well in the minors.  I could list others as well but those are the 2 prime examples.  They are not just bad.  They are almost historically bad.  Especially when you add it the fact they are top ranked players in the minors.    And the fielding?  I cannot for the life of me understand how these players come up to the majors so lacking in fundamentals.  In addition I believe that Manager Hyde has no business coaching a major league team trying to win a world series.  He is fine as a placard when there is a team that is supposed to tank.   He can keep things on a fairy level keel.    Like the Orioles from 2017 to 2021.  But his approach as a manager in getting a team to be disciplined and focused on taking that next step to the playoffs and beyond is severely lacking imo.  The Orioles play very poor fundamental baseball in all facets.  Hitting.  Running.  Fielding.  Pitching.    That is simply coaching 101.   I sincerely hope that the Orioles brass understands this and makes the proper moves this coming off season.
    • The poster child for the old school approach has struck out 26 times in 632 plate appearances.  He's hitting .322, his OPS+ is 109.
