Shohei Showdown - The Dodgers Series 8/27-8/29

Moose Milligan

Recommended Posts

Your matchups:

Tuesday:  Swervin Cole Irvin (6-5 4.82) vs. Jack Flaherty (10-5, 3.00)

Wednesday:  Corbin Burnes (12-6 3.82) vs. Walker Buehler (1-4, 6.09)

Thursday:  Cade Povich (1-6 6.10) vs. TBD

Hope Corbin returns to form on Wednesday and we can take one game this series.  The Jack Flaherty Rejuvenation Project will be anxious to shove against our cold bats and I believe he will.

Hey Cade, word of advice:

Ohtani hits at least two homers this series.

This one could get ugly.

I was hoping to be about 2-3 GB of the Yankees after this 2 week or so stretch where we played real teams and they played some of the dregs.  We're 1.5GB now - at absolute worst we'll be 4.5 GB after this series, which obviously wouldn't be good but still wouldn't be totally out of striking distance.

I very rarely go into a series thinking we’ll be very lucky to win one, but hard not to feel that way with this one.  We’re two timely swings away from entering this series on a five game skid. It’s just hard to imagine our starters shutting down the top of the Dodger order enough times to survive. And yeah Flaherty will come out tonight and shove almost certainly. Irvin can’t possibly be up to the task.

Then again there’s the reverse lock I suppose.

Feels shameful to doubt these guys after all we’ve seen, but hard not to with this one in spite of that.

I don't want to hear about injuries to SP but somewhere in this organization there is failure sending out Irvin and Povich to the mound with 30 games to go......

Expectations are often at the root of my discontent-it was a joy watching this team play so well last year especially defensively-this year has been difficult to watch at times.

Nevertheless Irvin and Povich should not be starting in MLB let alone for a team with WS aspirations.

You don’t want to hear about the injuries but they are the reason they are being sent out.  How many mid rotation starters do you think teams can afford to have laying around?

Please find an example of a team where your first paragraph applies, and that team is/was in a better position on 8/26.

This year may go down as a "what could've been " year as we all get older and reminisce about the window for this group of players. The obvious and easy answer is injuries. To pretend otherwise is folly.

I don't work for you.

That comment was specifically about the Orioles not other teams.

Right no matter what it hard to just have a ton of talented starters.  I know some like to blame not drafting pitchers much in the draft but no matter what injuries will happen and you can’t fill spots.  The Guardians have been great with pitcher development the last 5 years or so and draft pitcher heavy most drafts.  This season they can’t find starters to save their life, they have had to pitch Carrasco and even were so desperate they traded for Alex Cobb who was injured and hadn’t pitched all year.  They traded for him and of course he got injured yet again after 2 starts.  They have had to use 3 or 4 guys in the rotation all year as well.  They have had Bibee and Lively and a rotating door of guys with ERA’s over 5 besides those 2.
