I posted earlier in the thread a screenshot from Spotrac that shows Albert under O's control. It shows him pre-arb for 2025 and year 1 arb in 2026. That's the most clear reference I found. Other posters dismissed it. I honestly don't know how trustworthy Spotrac is but that reference is clear.

He was signed as a free agent. He was granted free agency for the first time in like 2013.

 

By the way, today is Suarez's birthday. He's a bright-eyed 35 year old as of today.

Weird thing about Suarez is that MASN had this being a 2 year deal when they talked about him back in April.

Why is that valuable? Yeah, he can go on dominant runs. But so could Bryan Baker.

I think he's back because Elias overpaid for him and went on about the acquisitions not being just about this year (Dominguez, Soto, Rogers). But I personally wouldn't bring him back. 

Yeah, I'd rather keep him over Soto.  I mean Soto can't start.  Yes Soto was dominant at times out of the bullpen but he was also gasoline on a fire out of the bullpen.  I would rather pay Suarez $4 or 5 million, knowing he can start or pitch in the bullpen than Soto, knowing he can only start and is liable to melt down when needed most.

Interesting. I had forgotten that they signed him and then got him in the pitching lab in the offseason. Since September is prior to the end of the season, I would take "two year contract" to mean September '23 is Year 1, and then '24 is Year 2. 

That is a cool article. Very encouraging how closely they are following the KBO.

I think you just hit on something there.  Just goes to show how info can be wrongor incomplete

Just because you sign as a free agent doesn’t mean you aren’t subject to the rules around 6 years of service time. For instance, I don’t believe Burch Smith or Matt Bowman can elect free agency unless they are outrighted, released, or non-tendered.

However, there are examples of foreign professionals being eligible to elect free agency early - for example Shintaro Fujinama last year.  It’s not part of the CBA, but presumably the commissioner will approve that special covenant as part of an FA deal if the player has at least 6 years of experience in foreign league.  It’s possible they would let Suarez combine his 1 year MLB service time (prior to this season) with his 3 years in NPB and 2 years in KBO.  And it’s possible they let Suarez write these terms into an MILB contract that had split MLB terms.  It wouldn’t have been my starting assumption, but it seems plausible.

Smith and Bowman signed Milb contacts, stop period. which means if they not have 6 years MLB service they make minor league money if they are in the minors. Albert signed a one guarenteed contract, 740k. Itwas A Milb contract to keep him off the 40. Even if he got DFA or never pitched one inning of MLB he still makes the 740k. He was good enough to demand this contract and get it. Smith and Bowman were not.

If service time comes into play he would not be Arb eligible until 2026. No reason to  tender, just pick him up at Min wage.
