Per Jeff Z: O's in serious talks for JJ Hardy!

Good luck. The Luke Scott fallout made twitter very difficult to sift through today. Hopefully it won't be so messy tomorrow.

I decided to keep my distance from the internet in general after that mess, but yeah, I think Facebook/Twitter is teaching us all to filter out certain irrelevant things we read. Though at the same time, it's only giving us more irrelevant things to read. :scratchchinhmm:

I feel unusually confident that the O's can get this done.

With Koji back in the fold, this should be MacPhail's #1 priority, might be able to get it done by tomorrow afternoon.

Ugh, I'm going to be on my phone checking twitter during all of my finals.

I feel like the O's and Twins came to terms right in the middle of the Bartlett negotiation...and that it's dependent the O's Rule V pick. I think it's basically already done, just the second player being conditional on who the O's get in the Rule V.

I agree completely. Now hopefully it gets done tomorrow and we can high five each other and glower about 1B.

Edit: Ironically, that would make 2 years in a row the O's send a Rule V pick in addition to a BP arm to another team for a 1-year rental.

I think you're right about that. Honestly if they get the trade done for Hardy and get one of Laroche/Lee for !B and another relief arm. I'd feel very happy about this offseason.

I sure do hope you are right, now upgrade 1B and I am happy. I think we should let the rotation be, give Tillman another shot, if he isn't doing well in the first 2 months, give Britton his shot. The only other thing I could imagine us in need of is POSSIBLY a bullpen arm, though I am confident with what we already have now that Koji is resigned and possibly another bat for DH/LF. I have no issue letting Scott play LF and Reimold DHing, but Reimold is nothing more than a HUGE question mark at the moment.....

Yeah, it's just a feeling. I don't want to put the cart before the horse, but it seems like nobody else is really in on Hardy right now.

I'm less confident at 1b, but I actually do have some confidence that LaRoche/Lee are the types of players attainable by this FO. I feel less confident about a guy like Crawford. He sure would be a sweet toppint to a Reynolds/Hardy/Lee offseason.

The Pirates were in on Hardy as well.

Pittsburgh is. And the Bartlett-to-San Diego deal didn't get finalized. It might be a matter of hammering a few details out or it might have stalled, but they're still not out of the race.

I'd have to consider us the front runners at this point, though.

You know, they can't afford him. I think that they were done once he was tendered. I could be wrong, but that is why we are the right home for him. MacPhail just saved enough on his closer to pay a little much for a rental shortstop.

You may be right. I'm sure Pitt is less interested now that he's been tendered. But, they have definitely been in talks with MIN after the non-tender deadline. They've spoken with the club at the winter meetings. So it's not as if they bowed out.

Unless he has something unexpectedly pricey in mind, MacPhail ought to have plenty of payroll room for Hardy and a couple more Koji if he wants.

Gotta think the Red Sox are going to be a lot more eager to move Scutaro after the Crawford signing. They've got to be about to burst. Wouldn't be surprised to see Papelbon on his way out, either.

They screwed the pooch on that one.

I doubt any team will trade for him with the intention of paying him $10.5M. He would have been non-tendered by everyone else after the season he posted last year.

They will probably look to trade Cameron and/or Scutaro.

    • I have to think something is going on behind the scenes. They look like they have just quit. Hyperbole, I know, but I wonder if there is anxiety over new ownership wanting their own people in the FO? Before you all tear me apart, IT’S JUST AN OBSERVATION!
    • Some don’t like this quote from Hyde but this kind of goes back to what the hitting coaches are saying. The coaches (if we are to believe them) are preparing these guys but once they get in the box, things are changing. This is all mental with these guys. It is time for them to relax and start having fun again. They need a players only team meeting and get themselves loosened up.
    • I doubt it is normal, though I’m sure that well more than half the pitchers who pitch for any particular team were not drafted by that team.   Teams use so many pitchers these days, and there are so many pitchers who cycle around the league off the waiver wire.
    • Couple of things about what Mike said: 1).   Grayson will not start during the regular season.    Time has run out to build him up.   That means Burnes, Eflin. Suarez, Kremer and Povich the rest of the way if they can stay healthy.   Maybe Grayson as an opener or a reliever in the playoffs. Coulombe  as early as Friday.  I am guess either Smith or Kimbrel go. Westy and  Urias  on rehab  in the next few days.   Getting these guys back could be a  big mental boost for the team.  What level of performance they will be able to produce coming off a layoff is another things.      I would think Mayo and Holliday are optioned. Mountcastle is swinging but his wrist is still sore.   Where that goes in anyones guess.   If he comes back Jimenez will not be needed. 2).  When Mike says this has been a winning team for that last two years and he believes they can get back to that,  to me he is not just talking about the team.     He is talking about himself.    This is the first time Mike has experienced things not going the way he planned to this degree.    Quite frankly his looks a little shell shocked.    The pitching having troubles with injuries is reality to him.  Pitchers get hurt.    But his offense going from 5 runs per game in the first half  to almost zero is shocking to him.   He did not see that coming.  Adley, and O'Hearn were supposed to step up when needed.   Instead they took a step back.  None of Holliday, Mayo, or Kjerstad being able to help in the 2nd half was not the way this was planned.    Here is hoping the Westy, Urias and Kjerstad can help real soon.
    • This board is smart enough to realize that the grass isn't always greener. The only way I see Hyde on the hot seat is if we miss the playoffs completely, which still feels very unlikely. Even then, I doubt he'd be fired during the offseason, but maybe. But then what? I don't think you give Buck Britton a shot at this roster. He's doing his thing and doing it well at AAA helping to develop guys. Could bring back Buck Showalter or Joe Girrardi, those sound like fun names. Or better yet, I bet everyone here with a torch and a pitchfork has their own little crystal ball with a short list of candidates ready to catch lightning in a bottle.
    • The 4-run deficit was surmountable if we had more than one player who can hit the damn ball.   Kimbrel giving up six runs in the 9th may turn out to be a blessing.
