Reeks of Latroy Hawkins. I think they should've offered arb to get the supplemental pick for Andruw.

Braves declined to offer arbitration to outfielder Andruw Jones and RHP Octavio Dotel; offered arbitration to Ron Mahay.

Jones and Mahay were Type B free agents, meaning both would have netted the Braves a draft pick after the first round if they signed elsewhere. Now Atlanta is only eligible to receive the pick for Mahay. Dotel wasn't going to get the club a draft pick either way. The other result of this is that if the Braves were to turn around and re-sign Jones or Dotel, the player wouldn't be eligible to play in the majors again until May. Of course, that's not going to happen.

The problem for Atlanta is that Jones had a very down year this year. He was making a lot of money before and players who go to arbitration don't get big pay cuts, no matter how badly they have performed recently. It would have been in Jones' best interest to take arbitration and try for a do-over on his contract year. The Braves couldn't risk having to pay him that kind of money and have him around for another year when they want to move in a new direction.
