I look at Pittsburgh's lineup and wonder, how are they in contention?

Very true - I've been saying this for years. The Cardinals have had the easiest trip the playoffs for most of the past 15 years.

Folks think LaRussa is/was a genius, but getting the Cards to the playoffs has not been a high bar to clear given how bad the Reds, Brewers, Astros and Cubs have been for most of that time.

The Cards won the Series a few years back with a team that probably wins 74 games in the AL East.

I'm not sure I understand. The Pirates are five games better than their runs scored and allowed suggest through 60 games. The sum of their offensive results indicates they've created about 205 runs, while they've scored 197. All that's well within the bounds of reasonable outcomes.

I'm not sure I understand why you don't understand. If you acknowledge that they've outperformed expectations, then you're not contesting what I said (the fact that "defiant" is a strong-sounding word doesn't mean that the Pirates' performance is completely "out of left field"...it just defies the numbers in that the team's season-outcome should be worse than it's been).

"Within the bounds" and "I expected this result" are not the same thing. However, if you'd honestly expect a team as offensively-offensive as the Pirates to be sitting at 32-28 (and in second place in their division) at this point in the season, I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree in re: what it means to "defy the odds," so to speak.

And here I thought my comment was fairly innocuous...

Winning is winning it does not matter who you beat or who you have. So if the Pirates won the world series it would not mean as much because they come from a weak division. However, Texas comes from a weak division and are the two time reigning Al champions so do they not deserve to be there?

This is about the winning perspective not talent because most are saying thier winning because of the weak division they are in.

They have a lot of young talent in their system.

Jones, Alverez (SP?), McCutchen, etc.

Jones is barely ok and he's 31 in a week. Alvarez has talent but he has so many issues. He's striking out almost as much as Reynolds but doesn't walk like or hit homeruns like Reynolds.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One of the better Twilight Zone episodes. Take off the bandages and the Pirates have a nice team. Phillies fans asked the same question at Sunday's game. Tolleson,Chavez.Betemit,Pearce,Flaherty,Paulino.

LOL-Exactly what I was thinking. Look at the guy pitching tonight and his ERA:)

They have McCutchen and ....?

Pitching and Defense

Burnett and Bedard have been very solid

James McDonald may be one of the 10 best pitchers in the NL this season

Their bullpen is lights out. Look at the season Jason Grilli is having.

Barmes, Walker, McCutchen, Alvarez, Tabata and Pressley are all very good defensively.

Neil Walker should not be underrated either. He was a catcher when drafted and has taken to second with a little more pop than most second basemen. He also learned a lot about second base from Bill Mazeroski - as such I don't know if you will find a second baseman who turns a nicer double play.

My quote was in response to Mayor McCheese saying they have a lot of young talent. Beyond McCutchen and maybe Walker, that's pretty much it. I'm glad the O's are missing Burnett and McDonald, but even happier they're getting a second shot at Correia after they couldn't hit him last year in Pitt.

I think that the OP was asking how they are winning when their stats are bad. Bad competition doesn't explain bad stats that translates into wins. It might be the flaw in the stats that people are looking at. Remember that we've learned in the last 10 years that most of the traditional old-fashioned stats are fatally flawed, and don't do a great job of being translated into value and wins. If they're batting averages are bad, and ERA is high, maybe they're drawing walks, converting baserunners into runs efficiently, and not giving up many unearned runs.

    • What is the obsession with lumping in Henderson’s debut and acclimation into the league with Holliday’s? As if they are in anyway comparable. I feel like I’m the only one that watched Gunnar come into the MLB. He homered in his first game! He was OPS’ing .900 3 weeks in! In 2023 he was BARELY below LEAGUE AVERAGE offensive production in April with a 96 wRC+. He was above league average in May. All the while making his typical spectacular defensive plays. We would have killed for anywhere near those types of results for Holliday. And he would still be in Baltimore if that were the case.  I’m stunned at the amount of times Gunnar is listed as an analogy to Holliday’s start. If the analogy is “look how much better a player can get after half a season of adjusting” and not “you can be a bad player when you come up just like Gunnar was”. Boggles my mind!
    • Burnes (3-1, 2.61) faced the Nats twice last year, allowing 4 ER in 5.2 IP the first time, 2 ER in 6 IP the second time.   Bradish (1-0, 0.00) also faced them twice, throwing 14 scoreless innings.  Advantage, Bradish. Trevor Williams (3-0, 2.27) started against the O’s in 2017, allowing 1 run in 6 IP.  Michael Parker (2-1, 2.53) has never faced the O’s.    The Nats come in scoring 4.18 runs per game, 18th in MLB and a 100 OPS+, 16th.  The O’s are 2nd in R/G at 5.29 and 2nd in OPS+ at 122.  The Nats lineup features 5 hitters who are off to good starts: CJ Abrams (165 OPS+), Luis Garcia (160), Nick Senzel (143), Jesse Winker (134) and Jacob Young (119).  The rest of the lineup has been a bit of a black hole, all at 79 OPS+ or worse     The Nats’ bullpen ranks 16th in ERA at 3.81, while the O’s are 11th at 3.54.    The Nats have built their 17-17 record on a pretty easy schedule, -0.4 SRS per BB-ref.   The O’s 23-11 has come against the toughest schedule in the league to date, at +2.0 SRS. Time to show the Nats who’s the alpha dog in this region.
    • I hate watching baker pitch so much it invokes the worst feeling of bad oriole reliever moments in my lifetime. I’d rather watch Benitez give up gopher balls in the playoffs, Kevin Gregg try to earn every save, give me Doug jones or Mike Tillman over Brian baker. I legitimately question Elias’ talent discernment because baker is still in the organization.
    • Converted position player that barely pitched in HS and NCAA. I mean barely. He’s been hurt his whole pro career.  Does he need innings to develop or should we just put him in his most likely role as a reliever and see what we have? It’s only May, and there’s no role for him this year at the MLB level, but considering he’s on an innings limit, he’ll be transitioned to a reliever at some point.  Pitch labs are fun, but he’s on the 40 man. It’s not a big deal right now, but this offseason it could be.
    • These two off days this week are going to be hell!  🤣
    • He seems like a great dude. The thing is, all this stuff is cool while the team is playing well and the vibes are good.  But if the team starts to struggle, and it inevitably will at some point, then these sorts of things won't be as well-received. I think it's fine to do these things now to connect with the fans but I think he would be wise to fade into the background eventually.
