It is better to be lucky than good. JJ was lucky tonight.

I'm no expert on pitching mechanics but it looks to me like he is overthrowing his fastball.

It seems like the sinker is both the best pitch in baseball, and the hardest pitch to throw consistently from year to year. Great sinkerball pitchers can become cannon fodder in the blink of an eye--think of Chien Ming Wang or Fausto Carmona (back when he was still Fausto Carmona).

He didn't look good but I'll take it.

Yeah, he's still getting the ball up and having trouble with the inner part of the plate. His mechanics are off but at least he can gain a little confidence from a successful outing.

Today we saw the JJ that we know and love. Sinking bullets coming in at 94 MPH, at the knees and on the corners. That's his pitch. When he's throwing it, he's unhittable.

He also mixed in some really nice changeups and curveballs to those last two hitters.
