After starting the season at an awful 7-17, the Astros have gone a blistering 35-20 since then, vaulting themselves to a respectable 42-37 overall record.

Subsequently, they are currently sitting just half a game behind the Red Sox and the Blue Jays for the #1 Wildcard spot.

That's .623 baseball over almost half a season (77 games.)

They could have had winning seasons by now without putting themselves through so much awful baseball. They need to win in the postseason for the strategy to pay off IMO. And that's where the fault lies in their logic -- once you get in, anyone can win.

Maybe, maybe not.

Overall, the Astros had 6 consecutive losing seasons between 2009 and 2014 before putting together back-to-back winners in 2015 and 2016.

The Orioles, the Pirates, and the Royals all went through consecutive season losing streaks of much longer than that before finally turning their franchises around.

I think that it's easy to say after the fact that they could have taken a more efficient route to putting a contender on the field.

The Astros close out the season with a dismal 8-1 loss to the mighty Angels. They finish 84-78, 11 games out of first and 5 games out of the wild card.

All they need is starting pitching.

He pitched one additional shut inning in the 6th before departing.
