Duquette on Johan

Now here this. Id much rather give that rotation(even spot start) to Gausman by the end of the month than Johan. I have absolutely no expectations of Johan.Anything he does will be a huge bonus assuming he can pitch reasonably well, but his fastball velocity had dropped to 77-81 mph after his second left shoulder capsule surgery, and that gives me a major red flag. I hate to be painted into a corner for starting him when Gausman is clearly the future and I believe close to ready. You don't have to agree, and most won't, but I'd hate to deny Gausman's promotion to the majors on a hope for past glory.

Gausman has no business being in this rotation at this point. He needs to get extended. I don't want another starter who can barely make it through 6. And it's arguable that the rest of the rotation is better than Gausman *at this point*.

No one is going to deny Gausman if he EARNS a berth. He certainly has room to grow at AAA if we happen to catch lightning in a bottle with Johan.

As others have said, if he can be anything like mark buerhle and keep teams off balance all game long with a solid mix of pitches and fantastic command, he could absolutely be a boost to this team this year. The guy was one of the best in the game in his prime and knows how to get guys out.

You HAVE to give him a shot to see what he has left. As a second lefty in the rotation, that could also have a huge impact. Gausman is the fallback later in the year if we can't get production from Johan.

Good problem to have though in my opinion.

No, my point in asking is that I'd like to see it and I'm surprised they'd want someone who would put an individual goal ahead of the team like that. I guess it's a little different for guys closing in on the end of their careers but I'm not crazy about the idea of catering to a players wants so he can attain personal goals.

So you think professional athletes, even in a team situation, don't also play to attain personal goals? Surely you can't be that naive.

You think that pitchers, agents, and GMs in the major league (of which there are 30 positions worldwide) are open to such experimental innovation?

Well, at some point someone started experimenting with making some pitchers specialists and closers, and now everyone does it.

Then a couple teams experimented with extreme defensive shifts and now almost everyone does it.

So the answer to your question is "Yes!"

Johan had better do it in 100 pitches or less - because you know they will pull him at that threshold. Buerhle goes 110 or better right? I see JS as another six inning pitcher with a gar on tee to pitch every five daze. I see him as no better than what we already have (as TX O might intone - IMO).

Btw, what is the exact time plan for Johan?

I would love to go see him when he is pitching in person here in Norfolk, can anyone tell me the EXACT night he will make his AAA start with certainty or is it still kind of up in the air?

"Santana didn't make his scheduled start today at extended spring training. Instead, he's expected to do so on Wednesday.

"Then we'll see where we're at," Duquette said. "We'll see if he wants to go out and pitch at a higher level. We can certainly accommodate that. But he's got another start down in extended and that should happen this week."

The Orioles had wanted Santana to pitch for Triple-A Norfolk on June 8 and at Double-A Bowie on June 13, but his schedule may be adjusted.

"The good news is he's got his pitches back," Duquette said. "His slider, changeup. His fastball velocity is coming along. And he's got control of his pitches. He's throwing strikes and feeling good. He's made steady progress on his rehab.

"I think in a couple more weeks, he could be in position to help the major league team."

Unless one of our current pitchers takes a pretty big step forward in terms of quality AND consistency, the Orioles path to the playoffs rolls through someone not on the current roster. Roy is advocating for the future and a future that is bright for the Orioles is going to include Gausman and or Bundy sooner rather than later.

Now that he's been put on the roster, I assume he can have 30 days of rehab. No reason to guess whether he could help us more than Gausman right now. Ask me in 30 days. By then, each presumably will have made 5 starts and we'll have much more basis to judge.

Of course they do. They just aren't usually blatant about expressing it.

And don't call me Shirley OR naive.
