vs. MARINERS, 7/25

I hate to think that multimillionaire athletes mail it in when on bad teams but the bump the Yankees tend to get from their stretch run acquisitions (Headley, Ichiro, Soriano) make me suspicious.

Like most human behaviors, there's probably a bell curve distribution: 80% of the players mail it in only in extreme circumstances (rough night, family emergency, trying not to make an injury worse, etc); 10% mail it in even if they just feel bleh today; and 10% never mail it in, even if it nearly kills them.

And then Cal. He did not use the mail. He transported.

Wright had an awesome game. :boogie:

What are his chances in the bigs? In 2014? How about in 2015? I'm asking because I don't know much about him. He isn't like Bundy, where every time you say "Gausman", the same sentence necessarily includes "Bundy". I'm guessing he's not part of the next wave of the "Cavalry". Or is he?

    • Kjerstad’s problem is that he’s the worst defensive OF on the roster, and the O’s value defense quite highly.   That leaves DH as his most likely spot, but O’Hearn and Rutschman have that covered most of the time, and you really can’t argue with the team’s .847 OPS at DH.  Like everyone else, I’d like to see Kjerstad getting more opportunities, but if he spends 2-3 weeks riding the pines in the big leagues, it’s not the end of the world.  If it was a couple of months, it would concern me.
    • Kimbrel to the IL will be one of the moves - probably today. Not sure about the other one
    • When you say "no scientific study to conclude that for sure" I think the reality is closer to "there's really no evidence that the pitch clock is anything but a minor contributing factor." I think it's quite obvious that the root cause of pitching injuries is almost every pitcher trying to throw almost every pitch at 110% of their reasonable capacity. Sure, wildly over-straining your arm might be slightly more dangerous if you do it a bit more quickly, but that doesn't change the fact that the wildly over-straining part is the overwhelming cause. It's like saying you broke your hand punching the brick wall, but saying the real problem was how quickly you repeated the punching. Of course that didn't stop people like Tony Clark from issuing knee-jerk, reactionary, baseless statements blaming the pitch clock. He's paid to look out for his current members, and only slightly cares that the product on the field is immensely more enjoyable with a clock.
    • This is about McKenna. Hyde doesn’t trust him to put him into a game as a defensive sub with a lead. Not me. Hyde.  So if Hyde doesn’t trust McKenna then we should bring in an OF that Hyde does trust to fill the role as late game defensive sub.
    • I think Holliday will be back in June. Mayo probably after that.    Don’t like it but that’s the way it is. Mayo needs to improve his defense.
    • I just think the Boogs sandwiches are bad. I used to enjoy them so I’m not sure if I’ve started going to better pit beef places or if they’ve gotten worse.  That said, I typically judge a BBQ place by the quality of their sides, Boog’s beans are an insult to baked beans, especially at that price.
    • 100% completely agreed!   I can usually start watching the game around dinner time.  We do have a strict no TV rule with the kids during dinner time, however, the Oriole games are the only exception.  It's not really watching, more like listening.  We'll usually turn our heads when we hear KB getting excited. By the time everything is cleaned up and the kids ready for bed - the game is usually in the 3rd frame (7/8/9) innings. Well done MLB and Orioles.
