    • Too much: worried about only 2 months of Miller vs a long career of ERod

So some people say it's too soon to tell if this was a win. Yet some people say don't trade Harvey or Bundy because they are going to be good. How is it to early to tell on one but not the other?

Some people like this trade. We give up our third or fourth best minor league pitcher for a reliever and ppl like it.

Yet the same ppl think trading a pitcher coming off TJ ( Bundy) would have been dumb to trade for Samardizja or Lester....Ridiculous.

Trading Bundy for a 2 month rental is different than trading EdRod for a 2 month rental. Samardzija also had an ERA well above 4 last season. He's not really an ace. He's a lot like Ian Kennedy who some didn't even think was an upgrade.

Pretty big gap between Lester/Price and Miller, no?

Miller is at 1.4 WAR right now. Price is at 3.9. If Miller pitches 25 innings he could be worth 0.7-0.8 WAR. Even if Price continues pitching extremely well and averaging 7 IP per start, he would likely accumulate 1.5-1.8 WAR. Lester could be closer to 2.0-2.5.

That's not taking into account who these players are replacing. There's a very good chance that Miller and Price have equal value in terms of WAR added the rest of the season (Miller replacing Matusz, Price replacing Smyly/Davis replacing Jackson). Obviously Price is under contract for next season though while Miller is a FA. Just thought it was an interesting way to look at it. The Orioles got a fairly significant upgrade for the rest of the season. Getting a TOR starter would have been nice but this was still a deal that helps the team tremendously.

Moderate overpay for what is probably a negligible upgrade. But, I think Ed Rod is probably somewhere between a lefty reliever and a #4 starter, so it's not something that will come back to haunt you. And the target is right - misses bats, keeps the ball in the park. I guess I'll say I'm fine with it, though I would have liked to see what Rodriguez could have brought back as part of a package.

This doesn't really move the needle in terms of playoff odds, but it will be nice to have another shutdown arm in a short series.

How. As far as I'm concerned ERod had just as good of a chance to be as good as bundy if not better.

Also I love how ppl are living in the past with JS. You are looking forward the future with Bundy but want to look at the past with JS because it makes you feel better about the Os.not getting him.

Answer me this. What does it make JS if the next five years he pitches as good as this year?

Don't Get me wrong, I Like the addition. I could careless about keeping ERod. But I think more should have been done considering the position they are in. And also considering what our competition have done to be better than us.

So, regardless of cost, make deals to give the illusion it makes the team that much better then it already was.

    • We do not have to give up Holliday, Basallo, or Mayo to get what we need.
    • So you think Elias will give up one of the top 3 prospects to get upgrades?
    • “Dramatics”? That’s an interesting way of framing my opinion. I promise you I am as calm and cool as a cucumber. There’s no “dramatics” going on here. As you know, numbers fluctuate during any given period of time in the season. Good/great players have bad/cold stretches and bad/terrible players have good stretches. IMO we do not possess the type of top end talent at the back end of the bullpen needed to win multiple rounds against the best opposition in October.  If you are confident in Cano/Kimbrel or worse in Vespi/Baker/Perez/etc getting Soto and Judge out in a big spot late in the game in Yankee stadium in October, that is fine. I am not.  Just as an observer of baseball, Holmes is a much better pitcher than any reliever that we have. I would be much more confident in his talent than any reliever that we have. Now if we had Felix that would be one thing. But this season we do not. And I would hate for a team as good as ours to be held back by not making the needed/necessary move(s) before we get into October.  IMO we did that last season (with the starting pitching) and it didn’t end well. And I acknowledge that everybody doesn’t think like me nor have the same championship expectations/aspirations. Some fans/posters here have stated as much and that they are happy if we have a winning team year after year or if we just make it into the tournament year after year, regardless of results when we get there. And that’s fine. That’s just not my desired outcome. The great thing about this board is that we don’t have to agree and are able to express our opinions.
    • That’s right. Great times are here and more ahead with this group.
    • Over/under on the number of times we walk Judge and Soto in this series?   10?  Nobody else really worries me.
    • 2 days in a row we got some help from the RedSox
