Trade Watch (It starts)

I think some of the folks here are kind of missing what just happened. The Jays traded away a 32 year old, declining SS who was mediocre with the bat and poor defensively, for a 30 year old SS locked up through 2020 at an affordable rate who is a clear upgrade on offense and defense.

Why would you NOT do that if you're the Jays?

Latroy Hawkins apparently has some value too, of course just for this year.

The better question (imo) is what in the world do the Rockies want with Reyes? Seems absolutely absurd to me unless they're about to flip him?

Weird trade for Colorado. If they are going to flip Reyes, why wouldn't they have traded Tulo for the piece(s) that they want. As good as a prospect as Hoffman is, the Rockies don't have a strong record of developing pitchers.

Tulo is 16 months younger as well. The Rockies are a mess.

Rockies got Reyes to make the money more even. The trade was about the two young arms.

While the Jays still need pitching, Reyes was not a good defensive SS (especially on turf)and decliing. I think this is a pretty big upgrade for them if Tulo can stay healthy.

If Tulo stay healthy is a huge statement.

You can call both player injury prone but Tulo takes that to a different level.

Tulo averaged 314 at bat in the three year between 2012-2014. He is already a 324 at bats this year. That turf in Toronto will not help him stay on the field. An he can't help the Jay on the DL.

Reyes averaged 544 at bats per year from 2012-2014 and he is on a pace for 576 this year. He doesn't have Tulo's power but he has much more speed that Tulo.

Here's perhaps a small silver lining, we haven't talked in detail about the Coors Effect yet.

Tulo for his career:

.951 OPS at home

.817 on the road

Of course even if you assume .817 is closer to his true ability in Toronto, that's still a significant upgrade over Reyes right now.

Rangers are front-runners for Hamels. Hearing general framework for package I can confidently say 1. Philly isn't leaving value on the table despite holding on to Cole through the off-season, and 2. even if interested Baltimore didn't have the horses to get it done.

I would be stunned if Hamels isn't in Texas, and I'd expect it will go down to the wire while the Phillies try and entice one of the other suitors to top the Texas collection.

Surely not Gallo, right? But certainly one of Mazara or Williams as centerpiece.

We should be selling, not buying. The market is primed for selling high.

Oh well. You are welcome to your opinion. Three games back is something that the team management and ownership feels the owe to the fans.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/inside-the-shocking-trade-of-troy-tulowitzki-125111163.html

There was always an agreement between Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort and his star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, spoken out loud so as to be abundantly clear: If the Rockies were to trade Tulowitzki, they were going to ask for his blessing first. Then came the blockbuster deal that sent him to the Toronto Blue Jays late Monday night, and Tulowitzki, according to sources inside the Rockies clubhouse, found out not via a phone call but when teary-eyed manager Walt Weiss yanked him from their game in the ninth inning.
