Death knell? 1998 Redux?

I don't believe in the Orioles' ability to go on a 9-game winning streak and then play .667 ball for the rest of the season after that. So, yes, I think that was our death knell. We are officially out of the playoff race. And we traded away a young pitcher for absolutely nothing (which is what Parra is). Even if Parra could hit like Cruz, it's not worth 2 months of it, when nobody else on the team can hit.

Think about it. Today, even if our hypothetical superstar rental Parra had hit two solo home runs, we still would have lost. It'd have been a less embarrassing loss, but still a loss. So what exactly does he bring to the team that the guys he's replacing didn't?

Nothing.

Duquette not having the backbone to either go all-in or all-out has squandered our potential value in BOTH the farm system AND the big league club. This is EXACTLY how we got into our 14 year consecutive losing season slump, and we only got out of it because of some very lucky trade deals (the Bedard deal comes to mind; and yes, it was luck that the other GM was willing to accept the deal, since you might never see a GM accept such a risky deal again in this day and age) and a strong manager coming in and raising morale.

Now Buck's newness has worn off; any value we had has been traded; and all of our good players are gone next season. I predict right now that the Orioles will not dip into the postseason again until at least the late 2020s.

I have never seen such a bipolar team before. They had a couple of stretches this season where they looked like juggernauts, and other stretches where they look absolutely lost. Mostly they have looked bad. The only reason they are not buried 10 games under .500 is because of those couple of hot streaks.

This teams is the post-2012 team that most looks like one of those sorry pre-2012 teams, except they have much more talent. Such a waste of talent, what an underachieving bunch. This is on the manager and FO folks.

Wow. That's all I have to say. Along with "step away from the ledge".

You say it's a waste of talent and that they're underachieving... but it's on the manager and the FO!? What!?

The players are the ones out there on the field underachieving not Dan Duquette.

Regardless of what we believe of their chances, I don"t think this team has believed it could win for awhile. Remarks by Jones and Davis earlier in the year suggested that the didn't have the kind of belief in this team that they had in the teams of the past few years. The two extra inning losses on this trip were games that we would have won in the past. Buck"s magic may have run out on this group.

Dan Duquette is underachieving if he doesn't have the appropriate metrics and scouts to sell high on guys like Norris. He's underachieving if pretty much every single acquisition he's made has fallen off a cliff. These aren't All Stars that he's signing...or even solid players that he's signing. He's signing AAAA players and hoping for the next Steve Pearce. But here you go:

De Aza

Cabrera

Lough

Young

Reimold

Parmelee

Snider

Let that sink in for a bit.

When a team underachieves, the manager and the FO must step in to shake things up. They need to send people down, bring people up, trade people, and kick some people's asses behind closed doors. None of those things have occurred sufficiently this year, it's obvious. In fact, I would say that Buck S' avuncular style of managing may have run its course. Players have to fear the manager a little bit to be effective.

Palmer said maybe time to bring.up Daniel Alvarez He said he is not on the forty man but the Orioles can get rid of some guys that are no big deal.

Dariel is the wrong guy to bring up. He is hitting .184 in his last 10 games. Mancini is the guy to promote.

I'd like to see immediate changes on this roster, now more than ever. I'd waive Paredes or Lough or Reimold or all of the above. I'd give a roster shot to either Walker, Mancini, Alvarez, and I'd get rid of dead weight like Garcia, even if it means releasing him. Id give a spot to Steve Johnson and release Eddie Gamboa to make room for Johnson. This roster isn't getting it done. There was no reason to lose 2 of 3 to a truly crappy Seattle team, especially without their best hitter today, and at home where they are 7

games under .500.

I would keep Jimmy, and have him play winter ball. Have him work on better strike zone recognition, cutting down the swing with two strikes, and using the whole field. Unlike the rest of the guys you mentioned, Jimmy has shown that he actually can hit in the major leagues at times this season. Have him plan outfield position down there.

This is not just directed at you. Buck's teams don't mail it in with over 1/3 of the season left. We're not "officially eliminated" from anything today. We just came off an 11-5 run, and we've now lost 2 straight. Yeah, being no hit sucks, embarassment on a national level, but it's one loss on a roller coaster ride. Consider...

41-34

46-49

57-54

If some of you want to call it over, that's your prerogative. Go watch the Ravens or Redskins. I'm going to "hang on for the ride" until, and if, we are ever really "officially eliminated."

I could't disagree with this post more. Fear the manager? I think respect works better. Buck has squeezed just about the most production out of a middle of the road talent level team as he could. We need better players, not a new manager. He was just voted the best manager in the league by his peers.

    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.
    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
