Toronto names Mark Shapiro president

I actually believe Shapiro is a really good baseball executive hamstrung by terrible ownership. As the Indians GM, he acquired Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, Grady Sizemore, Travis Hafner, Shin-Shoo Choo, Asdrubal Cabrera, Michael Brantley, Jason Kipnis, Carlos Santana, and Corey Kluber. That's a lot of talent that coming through Cleveland over the years. It's not his fault ownership was too cheap to pay for most of that talent. Shapiro did his job and he did his job very well.

Actually lets not give him too much credit on Lee, Phillips and Sizemore. Colon was a free agent that year and Indians were 14 games under .500 when he was traded. Indians ended up dumping Phillips in the lap of the Reds 3 years later for a player to be named. Ended up harming the Indians for years.

I think the Orioles overplayed their hand this winter. They should have just taken a prospect and hired Brady.

That's not a knock on Duquette. I think he has done a very good job so far for the most part. Our farm system is not looking too hot these days and a high-end prospect would make me feel a whole lot better about all the injuries and ineffectiveness.

This is my thoughts in a nutshell

It's just amazing to me how Duquette has gone from being the savior of the franchise to the Antichrist in the eyes of some posters. In my mind, he's done some good things and some bad things, and some of his decisions have either panned out great or terribly. I feel he's had a lot of good luck at times, and some bad luck other times (and a lot this year IMO).

This will be a challenging offseason. There will need to be a combination of some aggressive spending and some patience and creativity. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I still think Duquette will be gone after this season. Didn't he have to be dragged kicking and screaming out of retirement to take this job? And now with the late season collapse of the Orioles, I think at seasons end he will say his goodbyes, pack his bags, and go.

If he walks away of his own free will he leaves money on the table and could be barred from seeking other employment. And he's labeled a quitter. He isn't walking away. Now if the Orioles fire him, money changes hands.

Executive of the Year 2014! I don't remember anyone on the board saying that he should give the award back.

By the way, for all the guff that Duquette has gotten for letting Cruz walk this year, he was the one who brought Cruz to Baltimore for 1/$8M when nobody else would.

Some folks are very upset that he was interested after he was tampered with. I understand that. Despite the fact that he is a very intelligent human, I am sure he errs enough to make some folk hate him.

Are we really happy keeping DD?

We need a GM who can build an organization from the ground up, lead a re-build.

Is that anywhere on DD's resume?

I don't think so.

When you say,"We," I'm assuming you are referring to Phillies fans. Hey, you got your wish with Andy.

You are the anti DD. You remind me so much of another

poster that was on this board couple years ago. JTrea.

I sure hope not. But if he is then O's fans may regret him leaving. We may rue

the day that happens.

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
