Will Tillman's down year cost Wallace his job?

Smells fishy.

From Roch:

If the O's management wanted them all back why didn't they resign them months ago? They were under contract. Other teams should not have been able to talk to them about employment.

That is not true. If other teams want to promote they almost always are granted permission. Besides, if they want to go, all they have to do is wait out the season. This is not like a Leo Mazzone thing.

Just like the O's hiring Coolbaugh. Few coaches get multi-year contracts and no team is going to stand in the way of a guy getting a better job.

The O's may have a pattern that is forming. When a core player has an off season the O's bring in a coach to get him back to his high level of performance. When Chris Davis had a off year in 2014, Scott Coolbaugh who had experience in fixing him was made hitting coach. It worked. When Ubaldo Jimenez had an off year, Ramon Martinez was brought in as a special coach to help him find his old form. It worked.

Now Tillman has a ERA over 5.00 after several years of being in the mid 3.00's. Wallace didn't seem to be able to help him recover. Mike Griffin, the O's AAA pitching coach, has helped him in the past. Might that be a move the O's make this off season? Griffin as pitching coach and Ramon as bullpen coach?

What do you think? Is there a pattern forming?

All the coaches have been invited back. Some may not decide to.

A promotion for Kirby, Dickerson or Coolbaugh would be manager. I haven't heard anything about them being considered for any of those jobs.

What is a promotion for Wallace? He had a front office job and gave it up because he wanted to be in uniform as pitching coach.

So if the O's had to get permission from Texas to talk to Coolbaugh then it would have to be promotion that a team would offer to get to talk to Wallace. Another pitching coach job is not a promotion.

Wallace's contract is up, so he's free to talk with whoever he wants. If other teams contacted him without permission before today, then that would be an improper thing to do. But just because he's reported to be "drawing interest from other clubs" doesn't mean he's actually spoken to any yet. In any event, I hope Wallace stays. I don't think it's helpful to change pitching coaches every other year, and I don't think the pitchers' problems this year are necessarily on Wallace. He's well respected around baseball and in the clubhouse, from everything that's been reported.

Is there any talk of firing any of this year's coaches? I certainly haven't heard/seen any rumors. Looks like they are coming back (unless they want to go elsewhere).

So he waited until after the season. To persue whaterver it was he wanted. He's under no contract. Nor should he have been.

Kind of weird that the O's would let the coaches contracts expire before signing them if they wanted to keep them.

It is industry standard. Can't make a guy renew. Especially if they think they may want to hear what is out there.

Then please explain why the O's needed permission from Texas to interview Scott Coolbaugh. Was he on a long term contract as a minor league coach?

He wasn't a minor league coach, he was the hitting coordinator throughout the minor league system. That is an organizational position, not a seasonal job (like a coach).

The Rangers first denied permission to interview him during the winter meetings, so the O's could have been forced to wait for his contract to be up (which I believe was at the end of the year). Shortly thereafter, the Rangers granted the O's a 24-hour period to interview Coolbaugh. Buck and Brady met with him and he was hired later that day.

Coaching contracts end with the season, or shortly thereafter, unless the coach is under a multi-year deal (which is very unusual).
