Who's our 5th starter if we don't add anyone else

Worley is 18-13 with a 3.50 ERA and 1.351 WHIP in three seasons with the Phillies, 12-10 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.294 WHIP in two seasons with the Pirates and 1-5 with a 7.21 ERA and 1.993 WHIP in 10 starts with the Twins in 2013.

The American League didn't treat him kindly.

The critics will heap the same abuse on the Orioles if they don't improve their rotation.

I don't get why you'd frame things like that. Instead of putting Worley's numbers in context, noting he's had very few starts in the AL, some injuries, etc, it's a stupid comment about how he sucked in the AL. Adds nothing to the discussion.

Furthermore .......

In those 10 American League starts that Worley had that year, 2 of them were against National League teams in Inter-league play.

In those 2 games:

vs. METS: Oo.l 1 Innings, 9 Runs (7 Earned)

vs. BRAVES: o 3.67 Innings, 8 Runs

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=worleva01&t=p&year=2013

In his 8 starts against American League teams that year, Worley had a 4.91 ERA, and a 1.727 WHIP.

Those numbers are still pretty poor, though not as staggering. Still, you're dealing with a small sample size.

I don't think Worley was a bad move. On the contrary, I like him as a depth guy for the rotation, a swing man. You need to by at least 7 or 8 deep in the rotation and with him, Wright and Wilson as #6-8 and others behind, I like the rotation depth well enough. I think Tillman will bounce back, a bit less sold on Gonzalez given his peripherals over the last few years, but think he could be at least a fine #5. I like Gausman's chance to break out and think Jimenez could replicate last year. That all said, we've got solid depth in 4-5 types. I think Tilly and Gausman could be more, but we're still missing a piece or two for that top half.

Did that article make any sense at all? Here's my summary to save everyone some time: "How important is your 5th starter? Teams have pitchers and not all win a lot of games. The end."

Yeah, that was pretty much jibberish. It was something like: "The Orioles think they need a 5th starter. If 4 guys pitch well, they don't need a 5th. Except they don't have 4 good starters. We do have a good bullpen. Eh, the top 4 will probably be so bad that a 5th won't help. So yeah, the whole premise of my article is basically irrelevant. Sorry for taking up your time, guys!"

I don't know what happened to Cashner last year. His velocity didn't change but the results sure did. It shouldn't take that much to get a guy coming off the season he had in 2015 when he is making $7+ million in 2016 and in the final year of team control.

Yet they offered him the money. So they want something.

Yeah, he certainly won't be free, and I am sure San Diego is hoping he rebounds so they can get more for him at the trade deadline (or lead them to an improbable playoff run and net a QO). That said, he is an intriguing option.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I like the Cashner option the best. It's a great chance to buy low on a guy. I don't know what SD would want. Maybe we do end up giving up a pick for a pitcher, just not the #14 pick, the 2nd round comp pick. Hopefully DD can pull something off here soon.

Thankfully Dan can't trade the competitive balance pick during the offseason.
