Ty

There was an easier way. Just go to my long-running thread "A look at the Orioles, by month." I've broken down the starters' ERA each month for several years now.

If I can weigh in on the earlier controversy, I think it's crazy to count 1994 or 2010 if you are calculating the percentage of the time Buck's team made the playoffs. I believe that in 2010, the Orioles literally could have gone undefeated under Buck and they still would have missed the playoffs. (Edit -- confirmed.)

OK, thanks for that. That will definitely save me some leg work in the future if this topic is revisited.

And yeah, it's absurd to proclaim that Showalter failed to get the 2011 Orioles to the postseason when the team was 32-73 when he took over, and it's an outright falsity to proclaim that his 1994 Yankees did not make the postseason when there was no postseason that year.

No, it is simply being accurate.

I like being accurate.

You go to Buck's BR page and it shows 17 years managing, four playoff appearances.

I'm simple when it comes to facts.

I'm certainly not going to assume his '94 team would have made the playoffs. Teams have collapsed before.

I agree with you. There were 49 games left in the season and Baltimore trailed the Yankees by only 6 games. A lot of scenery can change in 7 weeks. The 2007 Mets held a 7 game lead in the NL East on September 12th but lost 12 of their last 17 games and missed the post season. Besides, if there were no playoffs in 1994 he can't be credited with a playoff appearance.

Except that he took it a step further.

He counted it as a failure to make the playoffs, and factored that into his equation.

If he is not to be credited with making the playoffs because there were no playoffs, he certainly cannot be charged with failing to make the playoffs ...... because there were no playoffs.

The Atlanta Braves are credited with winning 14 consecutive division titles, from 1991-2015.

The 1994 season is not counted as a failure of the Braves to win the division, because the strike insured that there was no division to win or lose.

The Braves' record in the strike-shortened 1994 season was 68-46, which trailed the Montreal Expos by 6 games, who were 74-40 when the season was aborted.

Just as Showalter and the Yankees are not credited or discredited with winning or losing the division respectively that season, neither are the Braves.
