How hard is it to ask a strategic question?

Perhaps a reliever has a nagging injury he doesn't want to discuss. I still don't get why he used Brach the night before. I get O'Day and I assume he didn't want Zach with 4 nights off straight.

I do wonder how he will use Bundy. Will he use him back to back some? They had lefties up and Matusz isn't back. Perhaps he didn't trust Givens there, not sure.

Or a decision needs to be made about the lefty configuration of the staff. And that game helped make it.

I typically dislike the sentiment that every time a run is allowed after the first that it is Buck leaving his starter in too long. If you listened to some posters around here w/r/t managing starters, every run is the result of leaving the starter in too long, which is just silly. THAT SAID, I really don't understand Buck's decision last night, especially with today very likely cancelled.

Not to mention, Monday being an off day.

I don't think it surprised anyone that Gallardo didn't get an out in the 7th. I was shocked when Gallardo was out there. You can always send someone down if the bullpen is used up after you get the win. Someone is going to be sent down when Matusz comes back anyway.

To me, we haven't seen a GREAT hitting team yet. Not the Twins, Rays, Red Sox a bit better, and the Rangers who were without a couple of big bats. Here come the Jays. They can out pitch us for sure...and they match our power. Im interested in seeing how we fare.Im not a Mike Wright believer right now.If he pitches.

:agree: on Wright I see Tommy Hunter do over with him. JMHO hope he proves me wrong we surely need him to step up.

Jim Palmer questioned as did this entire board Buck's decision in the 7th inning. In the post game interview did Jim Hunter even touch on the subject?, no.

I mean it is so insulting to the fans at home. How difficult is it to ask the manger about pitching Gallardo in the 7th inning? There is no point to these interviews at times at all. I don't expect Hunter to be as critical as a fan or newspaper writer but just ask the question. It isn't that difficult.

They were talking about it on 105.7 yesterday afternoon, somebody must have spoke to Buck, because they said that Buck said he had 3 guys in the pen, that he was trying to avoid using, and they were expecting to play a game on Sunday. He also said they had 3 lefties coming up.

I don't have any problem with trying to get a 6th inning our of a veteran starter. At some point really soon, they need to get through 6 innings. Sometimes its worth trying to just get a couple lucky outs.

I agree with Frobby, I'm more perplexed about using relief arms so liberally, with a big lead, the night before which is what caused bullpen crunch.

Just so it's clear, Gallardo had pitched 6 innings. He was brought out for a 7th and allowed 2 baserunners who eventually scored.

I think our pitching staff is going to get absolutely clobbered against the Jays. Tillman got destroyed last year. Mike Wright is meatball city. Ubaldo is an enigma, though. It's all a matter of whether he gets the lower half of the strike zone called. If he doesn't, he's done.

I've learned as much as i enjoy sports I process them differently than most people I may just not have the emotional connection to understand this....but....

What difference does it make if they ask a strategic question? (Not meant to be combative)

I mean, the end result doesn't change. So you have an explanation, this changes nothing really.

The Why is only ever important to me when knowing it allows me to change some the outcome of a future event. I have no control over the Orioles so the question--other than curiosity--is not one I care much about, so I generally am curious what will knowing it will change?

I had no problem with Gallardo starting the 7th. But when a guy gives a four pitch walk to the #9 hitter to start off an inning, bringing the tying run to the plate, I'd like to see Buck make a move then. Particularly when the #1 hitter had owned Gallardo all game long and you have the heart of the order coming up behind him.

No disagreement here, I did not want him coming back into the game in the first place.

I saw multiple posters say that our starters needed to get us 6 innings, or that they couldn't blame Buck for trying to get 6 innings and I wanted to make it clear that isn't what occurred.

    • I think at $5 million he's an insurance policy that can go to the pen if need be. I'd rather not go into spring training with him penciled into the rotation. But I also don't want Trevor Rogers penciled in either.  He also could be a bridge until Bradish is ready.
    • So to all of you saying you would bring him back…. GRod, Eflin, Kremer, Felix, DC, Webb, Soto, Dominguez, Akin and Cano That leaves room for 3 more pitchers and this doesn’t include McDermott, Rogers or Povich. 3 spots left, 1 high end reliever and 2 starters. Which of those 3 spots do you want him at or, who do you take off the above list and keep Suarez over?
    • I went to a few games this year, but here are the reasons I didn't go to the WC games: The team had been an absolute bummer to watch for 3 entire months out of the season and to be honest by the time the playoffs got here I was exhausted and annoyed. The brand of baseball they had been employing for half the season (over-reliance on the home run, terrible ABs, iffy defense) frankly sucked to watch, even on TV, and I'm already spending money to watch them on TV. I wanted them to prove they could get past the WC round before I shelled out more money. I imagine a lot of people share these reasons with me.
    • People whining about 41k attendance and blaming it on the city have no idea what they're talking about.  Why were there 47k+ of Game 1 against the Rangers last year? Did the city all of a sudden not matter then? It was also a day game. Alas, it was on a Saturday. And they had that locked up for awhile. Why has attendance went up YoY? Look at the Astros and the Brewers. They had *less* people at their G1 games. Is Milwaukee not a nice city? Is Houston not a nice city?  This is pretty simple. It was a day game during a weekday with crappy weather coming off a pretty lackluster performance going into the playoffs. And folks didn't know if there'd even be a home game until, what, barely a week before?  People like winners. Miami is an awesome city. They got a new stadium when it first opened. But guess what? That team stunk in fairly short order upon stadium opening and attendance tanked.
    • Would love to bring him back on a 1 year deal for anywhere from $3-$7m.  Great depth arm. Don't pencil him into the 5th starter role. This club needs to pickup two starters: a TOR arm and a BOR arm. Have an open competition for the 5th spot. If Suarez doesn't make it, he'd be a great middle reliever arm. Open competition between Free Agent, Suarez, Povich, McDermott, and Rogers. Do not just go into 2025 penciling Rogers into any role.
    • It's really tough to set a top priority when I don't know what the budget is. I think the new ownership group will be investing more than the previous regime, I just don't know by how much. I highly doubt the O's will ever be in the "spend whatever it takes mode" like the Mets a couple years ago or the standard yearly overspending by the Dodgers or Yanks. It's still tough to make my Christmas list without knowing the balance sheet. If we're the Dodgers, we keep Burnes and Tony Taters. Hopes and wishes it is then: Even if we sign Burnes, which I wouldn't mind at least making a run at him, I think we need another starter, because injuries and how this year went. Even if the Mountain returns healthy, we need high leverage help in the pen. Veteran bat - no idea who, but if Mullins and Santander leave, we will have to add someone -- I don't know that our prospects will be stepping up or stepping back next year.
    • What I like about Webb is he has an excellent changeup and can get LHB's out. Besides Felix, everyone else in the bullpen needs to be matched up. I think it is important to have another reliable guy who can be brought in to any situation. He is also cheap. I think he is too valuable to just give him away to another team. I like him better than Perez for sure.
