In all seriousness, what about offering them Beckham, and letting Valencia play 3B this year?  I could see pros and cons to that depending on what we could get back in return for Beckham.  Cons are that I have to believe Beckham will be better defensively than Valencia at 3B, plus he offers speed at the top of the order, whereas Valencia is obviously more of a 6-8 spot guy in the order.  And then there's the issue of needing a SS for 2019 if Beckham is traded and Manny rolls out via FA.  Still, Valencia's bat has been much better than Beckham's other than his first month here after the trade, and if we could get a decent SP prospect back from Minnesota, it might be worth at least discussing.....

Beckham has a ton of value right now as a cheap, under control infielder with a solid bat for an middle infielder.  I don't think he'd fetch nearly enough in a trade.  Don't want the Twins doing to us what we did to the Rays in acquiring him.

What are the chances of the Twins trading Lance Lynn, whom they just signed to a modest one-year deal, for a player will be a free agent next year and be commanding upwards of $250 Million for 8 or more years ???

I guarentee they'd trade Lance Lynn for Manny in a half of a heartbeat and laugh at the Orioles for the rest of eternity.

Trade him for Lance Lynn, then sign Alex Cobb to a 3-year contract to round out the rotation.

Bundy

Gausman

Cashner

Cobb

Lynn

If Lynn has (at least) a pretty good season, try to bring him back for 2019 and 2020. They could use a lot of money that they might have had to use if they had wanted to keep Machado.

And what are the chances that it will happen?

You asked me if my post was a joke. The person whom I was responding to was making a joke in the first place.

You responded what are the chances the Twins make that deal.

The chances the Twins would make that deal are 100%.

I was a joke, Luke.

I don't think that the Twins would make the deal, and the chances of that particular deal happening for whatever reason on the part of either team are 0%.

Please leave it it alone.

Luke, I should have just answered your question directly in the first place.

I apologize for not doing so.

It's ok, I'm not mad or anything, just confused and I just wanted to push back strongly against the idea that Manny (30-40 million in surplus value) is similar in value to Lynn (literally 0 in surplus value since he was just on the open market).

I'm not sure that the Twins would be willing to splurge for keeping Machado in the long run, and I'm also not sure that they would give up a solid pitcher for even an outstanding position player the upcoming season. It used to be said that pitching and defense is 70% of the game. It may be closer to 60%, but I believe that either way, it is well over half of it. I think that the Orioles' current off-season exemplifies that, in that adding 2 solid starting pitchers (Andrew Cashner, and perhaps Alex Cobb) to what was a historically bad rotation last season would make all the difference in the world. I agree with that notion, and I believe that signing Cobb (in addition to already having signed Cashner) could very well make the difference in whether or not the Orioles would be considered bonafide contenders this season.

So while on paper, Manny Machado may be 10 times the value that Lance Lynn is, I would be reluctant to make that one-year swap (on the part of the Twins) unless the remainder of my starting rotation was loaded, or at least close to loaded.
