The Detroit Tigers Effect

The Detroit Tigers have the potential to have a drastic effect on the Orioles off season and season. The Tigers are in sell mode. Years of payrolls way above what was comfortable for thier owner in an effort to win have bloated their high price assets. News stories are everywhere that they are willing to trade anyone.

This could have good or negative effects for the Orioles. Certainly the addition of Verlander, Martinez (either) or Cabrera could change the look of the Orioles next season. And the Orioles should explore those opportunities as teams in mass sell off mode typical take less than market value.

Even if the Orioles aren't the direct recipients of traded players, their movement elsewhere could affect the Orioles off season. Cabrera, JD, or Victor to the Astros, Toronto or abother team would take away a team in need of a corner OF, or DH, two positions of need for the Orioles. It could drive down costs on free agents that the Orioles are looking at.

This effect is likely to continue into next season as Victor or Cabrera could end up with a division foe or WC competitor. I could also very easily see Boston getting Verlander as consolation for not being able to pry away Sale.

Detroit is going to have a lot to say about the Orioles future.

I think that anyone who expects this expenditure is sorely wrong.

To be clear, my original post was not about trying to get Cabrera, Verlander or Sale even. I don't think they are attainable in prospects or salary. It was about the effect of them being added to the market will have on moves the Orioles potentially could make and the (potentially massive) reorganization of talent their off season could have.

The one player I do think makes a lot of sense is JD Martinez, and he looks like he might be the next to go.

It is an interesting possibility that we get someone from Detroit, but I don't think it will happen. Would love it if we got a Verlander type or one of the Martinez', but really the only thing we have to trade is Sisco and Mancini. Maybe Wright if they believe in him as a BP piece.

We just have to worry about the Yankees getting them. Boston only needs a DH, and they will probably use Sandoval next year. Yankees had $82 million coming off the payroll this year, so that's where I'd look to see if they would add someone.

I think you are right.

Not trying to steal your thunder. If we're going to deal assets, I would rather go after Sale and that very affordable contract.

Who do you think we'd have to give up to have a competitive offer?

Keep in mind that the Nationals have been talking to them. They have Ross, Giolito, Turner, Voth, Robles.

Chris Sale reminds me of Bedard in the sense that's he's affordable, but someone will give up an Adam Jones/Chris Tillman type package with some BP pieces to get him. He just is a train robbery waiting to happen.
