Jung Ho Kang denied US work visa, may miss season

According to this story, the Pirates' Jung Ho Kang has been denied a work visa by US authorities due to his third DUI offense in South Korea. He may now miss a good portion or perhaps all of the 2017 season. There is also mention of Kang also possibly having a DUI in another country (not Korea or the US). Kang received an 8-month suspended jail sentence in Korea for his last offense.

No pity here, sorry. It's time for the guy to grow up and stop risking the lives of others.

During this latest episode, Kang (who has a tattoo on his leg...of his own face) plowed through metal median poles in a congested area and then fled the scene. Dashcam footage from his own car of the accident can be seen here. When police tracked down the car, he said his friend had been driving the vehicle... until additional CCTV footage clearly showed Kang behind the wheel. The third strike cost him his Korean driver's license; I assume his celebrity alone kept him from doing time. It also cost him a spot on South Korea's WBC team.

The Pirates claimed to be unaware of Kang's first two DUI offenses and recently acted surprised when they learned about them. You would think the team President Frank Coonelly would be more up on these things, given Kang's hard-partying reputation in Korea and Coonelly's own DUI.

Wow, It is very fortunate that no one was killed. It is also disturbing that

Kang claimed that someone else was driving the vehicle. This guy needs

to take responsibility for his actions and get some professional help.

Baseball needs to take a backseat until He gets his life together. I find

it very curious that the Pirates gave a guy millions of dollars without

checking into his background which includes DUI's.

    • Wieters' bWAR was 13.3 through his first 4 seasons (2009 - 2012).  It ended at 18.3 after his last season in 2020, so he was basically ineffective for the last 8 years of his career. Adley's bWAR is 13.1 through his first 3 seasons. So it isn't like Wieters didn't have a strong start to his career just like Adley did.  I think the concern that folks have is that the rest of Adley's career will play out like the rest of Wieters' career.  It seemed very unlikely halfway through this year, but this has been one hell of a drop-off.   And after Wieters never lived up to expectations, it is definitely a fear that we may be reliving this again.  Let's hope this second half was just an aberration.
    • Adley has been in a horrible almost 4 month slump. Before that, he was the WAY BETTER offensive player. But I pose this question: What does it matter if Rutschman turns out to be worse than Wieters? Matt Wieters was drafted almost TWENTY YEARS AGO. No one in this org had anything to do with him being on our roster. HEck none of our current front office was even here for his entire Orioles' career.
    • I do feel like Adley is out of shape or at least has gotten more out of shape than usual. That’s part of the reason I think he’s hurt…not working out as much. If he is healthy and the slump is this bad, I’m ok questioning whether or not the new GF(ie the distraction) is part of it. Is he putting everything into the game that he should?
    • Can they? - Yes it's possible. Anything is possible.  Will they? - I have my doubts. The team was abysmal (minus Cedric Mullins and O'Hearn's pinch hit appearance) with the bat in their hands yesterday. And for many of our hitters this was nothing more than a continuation/carryover from the second half of the season.
    • Right now Geronimo Gil is better than Adley.  But I'm not gonna kick Adley while he's down.  Let him get a reset, work on some things in the offseason, and hope that this 2nd half ends up being just an aberration in a good career.
    • Which is crazy since they put 7 on the board vs Ragans hitting all singles. They had an approach that worked and then they went away from it.
    • It’s what this board does.
