Ten for 10 years

Interesting exercise - question is how many years will the current top guys have on the list.  I see no mention Rendon or Chapman on these lists.  Rendon is entering his age 29 season, while Chapman will be age 26 in 2019.  Probably at least five good years ahead for Chapman and his fangraphs war near 6.5.  The two hardest guys to judge are DeGrom and Jose Ramirez - also entering his age 26 season.

So, how many good years are ahead for Trout, Machado, Lindor, Harper, etc.

I think the board has named the right minor leaguers - Vlad Jr, Tatis Jr, Jimenez, Robles, Lewis Jr.  Not sure Robles will become a 6 WAR guy.

I think my list would be most similar to Luke's -  Acuna, Soto, Trout, Lindor, Bregman,  Correa, Betts, Vlad, Jr, Jimenez, and Tatis Jr.  I initially had Royce Lewis on my list, but he is likely two years away and I can't give that away for free.

OF Trout Betts Yellich

C Rutschman

Ohtani, Tatis,

Good team, I'd take Acuna over Yellich though.

Who's the 1B if you put Vlad at DH?  I can't think of a really good young first baseman that I'd want to have for 10 years.  There's Goldschmidt but he's 31, not sure if you'd want him for 10 years.

Freddie Freeman is 29.  Rizzo is 29.  Votto is 35, can't have him.

Matt Olson is only 24 and is the one I keep coming back to.  I know the point of Frobby's exercise is to just name players regardless of position but if you're gonna break it down by position I can't think of first baseman that stacks up with the rest of the talent out there that's 23-26 years old that I'd want for 10 years.

Vlad's listed as 3B so Im hoping he can move to 1B and I can have Ohtani DH.

It occurs to me that Shohei Ohtani is an option.    Among pure pitchers here are some thoughts:

Jack Flaherty, 22,

Brad Keller, 22

Shane Bieber, 23

Walker Buehler, 23

German Marquez, 23

Jose Berrios, 24

Luis Severino, 24

Aaron Nola, 25

I’ll stop there    Honestly I’d take ten hitters before guessing which pitcher would hold up over ten years.

Grow the bats, buy the arms.

I think it's almost different these days.  With guys like Harper and Machado having to wait out a really long FA search and not commanding what they thought they'd get, I think buying the bats is more appetizing than arms.  Bats are easier to predict, arms aren't.

An awesome, mostly homegrown rotation and bullpen on cheap contracts is better to me, IMO, than spending a lot of money on a pitcher who's 30+ years old and not knowing when he's gonna need TJ surgery.

They don't have to wait out a long search.  Either could have signed long before now, they are trying to improve their deals.

Now someone like Jones might be waiting for the phone to ring.

At 10 guys, I've got Vlad, but for discussion's sake, I'll say you're crazy if you're putting Eloy or Tatis on.  My last two on were Yelich and Bregman, and as I guess Roy related to us how Frank put it to Bobby Grich, it's all projection until you do it at the major league level.  Vlad's consensus 80-bat is a genuine rarity, and he's 2.5 years younger than Eloy.   Tatis is Vlad's age, but may not hit.

Yelich is on your team until he's 36.  I'll take my chances that someone like Tatis will be putting up big numbers in 2028 and carrying the team.

    • Assuming we make the playoffs - and Fangraphs assures me it is still 98.8% certain - do we deserve a champagne-and-goggles celebration this year? Feels like instead they should be making a group apology to the fans for making it close.
    • I'm surprised that with the pitching injuries and issues that the Orioles had, we didn't see more guys from Bowie get moved up to Norfolk to atleast check them out. Heid and Roth (who did deal with an injury in July that impacted him for a few weeks) could have gone to Norfolk for the last month. Loon, if he wasn't injured, could be in place to be there next season.
    • Correct.  We'd be way better off if half those guys were in the lineup.   But yeah, let's fire Hyde.
    • At this stage, I don't care how we get in - just get in. As been said on here a zillion times, the playoffs are a crap shoot. As bad as it seems right now - WHY NOT?
    • Oh, I forgot Mountcastle.  He had a 2.2 bWAR season going (1.4 oWAR). And he's effectively been replaced with O'Hearn who is a 1.3 bWAR player (which has been dropping) of which he has a -1.4 dWAR and a 1.8 oWAR. So there's a net negative there, too, going from O'Hearn part time to him FT and losing Mounty's bat. Injuries are a part of any given team, but I don't think it's unfair to say this team would be at 88-89 wins with even half of those guys back.
    • While agree that taking this year's Santander out of the offense would hurt. This is the only year that he has performed at this level. He's OPS is 37 points higher this year, than his avg. His OBP stinks and he goes cold for fairly long periods. He's had a couple of heaters that have padded his OPS. His career OPS+ is 114 and that is buoyed by this years 132. I am not saying he sucks or is even at a replacement level player. But he is a pretty flawed player who is not likely to repeat this year which has been pretty flawed as well. I like Santander and I think he provides valuable leadership. I just don't see him having the value that it will take to keep him. I also don't think he is the type of player that ages well.
    • You really should have to finish in first place to make the playoffs. If the divisions were large from back in the day then I could understand having 2nd place teams make it. It was such an accomplishment back then. We can all agree 3rd place teams making it is a joke.
